Trafalgar Entertainment

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Trafalgar Entertainment is an international live entertainment business focussed on new productions and the distribution of live-streaming content.[1] Its headquarters are in London in the United Kingdom.[2] Trafalgar Entertainment is the second-largest theatre operator in the UK.[3]

The company was co-founded by theatre entrepreneurs Sir Howard Panter and Dame Rosemary Squire in 2017 after they stepped down from running Ambassador Theatre Group. Panter and Squire are Joint CEOs of Trafalgar Entertainment.[4] Panter is also Creative Director, and Squire is Executive Chair.

History[edit]

2017-2018[edit]

During its early years, Trafalgar Entertainment initially consisted of the former Trafalgar Studios and event cinema specialists Trafalgar Releasing, formerly Picturehouse Entertainment.

In 2018, Trafalgar Entertainment acquired Stagecoach Performing Arts.[5] Stagecoach shares a Head Office with Trafalgar Entertainment in Woking, UK.[6]

Trafalgar Entertainment opened a new production office on The Strand in Central London.[7]

2019-2020[edit]

In 2019, Trafalgar Entertainment began new partnerships with Luke Shires Marketing, London Theatre Direct and More2Screen. Later in that year, Trafalgar Entertainment announced the launch of Jonathan Church Theatre Productions.

On March 16, 2020, the company's flagship London venue, Trafalgar Studios was forced to close its doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic.[8] In May 2020, planning permission was granted to return the premises to a 630-seat theatre.[9] Westminster City Council granted the planning permission, and building work commenced during the summer.[10] The redevelopment was overseen by Foster Wilson Size Architects.[11]

In May 2020, Trafalgar Entertainment reached an agreement with the New South Wales Government in Australia to become the new operator of Sydney's Theatre Royal, in a 55-year sublease.[12] Theatre Royal Sydney is due to open in September 2021 with Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill.[13]

2021-present[edit]

In May 2021, Trafalgar Entertainment acquired a 70 year lease to operate Olympia Theatre, with 1,575 seats.[14] Set to open in 2025, Olympia Theatre forms part of the £1.3 billion regeneration of London Olympia.[15]

In June, Trafalgar Entertainment opened its first ever cinema complex, The Chiswick Cinema, a five screen boutique cinema with a private members' club.[16]

The newly renamed Trafalgar Theatre re-opened in July 2021 following a restoration project aiming to reinstate it back to its original heritage design.[17] The restoration resulted in the creation of a new single auditorium at an increased capacity.

Shareholders[edit]

The largest shareholder of Trafalgar Entertainment is Barings Alternative Investment, which operates as a subsidiary of MassMutual Holding LLC, with assets under management of US$771 billion.[18] Other shareholders include Greg Dyke, James Tanner, NWH Consulting Ltd, Sire Richard Branson and Griffon Corporation.[19]

Production activity[edit]

Trafalgar Entertainment produces new shows and musicals via its production arm, Trafalgar Theatre Productions, led by Panter as creative director and producers Daniel Brodie and Matt Parritt.[20]

Also based in London, Jonathan Church Theatre Productions produces plays and musicals in the West End, on tour in the UK and internationally. Helmed by artistic director Jonathan Church CBE and executive producer Georgia Gatti, JCTP regularly works with both commercial and subsided partners.[21]

Current productions[edit]

Current productions and co-productions from Trafalgar Theatre Productions include the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical Jersey Boys, the award-winning musical Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill, a revival of Anything Goes at the Barbican Theatre, and the tenth anniversary UK & Ireland tour of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.[22]

Older productions[edit]

In the West End, Trafalgar Theatre Productions had produced and co-produced On Blueberry Hill, The National Theatre's A Taste of Honey, and the comedy Education, Education, Education.[23]
