In August 2016, it was announced that Korean zombie film Train to Busan was being adapted into an English language remake, for which several studios were bidding to bought the rights, which included Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox from the United States and Canal+ and EuropaCorp from France.[1] In December 2016, Gaumont bought the English remake rights from the Korean distributor Next Entertainment World.[2]

In September 2018, it was reported that New Line Cinema had bough the film's rights from a bidding war against Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Studio 8, Netflix, and Lionsgate, which James Wan and Michael Clear would produce through their Atomic Monster Productions along with Gary Dauberman and Gaumont. While Dauberman would also be writing the screenplay for the film.[3][4]
