Transhealth Northampton

Transhealth Northampton is a comprehensive and independent trans healthcare center built to empower trans and gender-diverse adults, children, and families.[1] Transhealth Northampton was founded in 2021 to provide clinical care, research, advocacy, and education related to gender-affirming healthcare.[2][3]
History
Needs Assessment
Transhealth Northampton has its roots in the experience of founder Perry Cohen and his co-parent, Brooks Bull. Tired of driving two to three hours to a city for certain types of gender-affirming care for themselves and their family, Perry and Brooks dreamed of creating a comprehensive center for gender-affirming care in Western Massachusetts. With the generous support of his parents Jan and Rick Cohen, this dream became a reality.[1]
The first step in founding the center was to build a team to conduct a study of local needs known as The PATH Project (Plan and Act for Transgender Health). This needs assessment was conducted as a partnership between local gender-diverse community members and staff from The Fenway Institute, Cooley Dickinson Health Care, and Harvard Medical School to ensure that as many voices as possible contributed to the foundation of the center.[4] The goal of PATH was to reach as many people who typically don’t get their needs taken into consideration. Based on the needs assessment, the center could offer the services that people actually want and need with a commitment to always listen and respond to the community.
Founding
Transhealth Northampton was incorporated in Massachusetts on October 16th, 2020.[5] At the time, the organization incorporated with Dallas Ducar NP as the President, Katie Wolf as the Treasurer and Clerk, and a Board consisting of Perry Cohen, Lauren Meade MD, and Adrian Daul MD. At this time, Dallas Ducar was elected to the position of Chief Executive Officer and Katie Wolf was hired as Chief Operating Officer.
Transhealth Northampton officially opened on May 4th, 2021.[2] At this time the CEO, Dallas Ducar, wrote about centering transgender voices in the creation of the healthcare center.[6] This had been a dream of Perry Cohen's for years and the fact that it could happen was hailed as monumental.[7] This independent and comprehensive healthcare center ensured that 100 percent of the budget would be dedicated to trans and gender-diverse patients.[3] The healthcare center began by providing care for trans and gender-diverse people of all ages in Western Massachusetts clinical services including: primary adult care, pediatric care, gender-affirming hormonal care, and mental healthcare.[8] A range of non-clinical services were also in the vision to support the community, and its broader agenda will be advanced through research, education, and advocacy.[8][9] These pillars of clinical care, research, education, and advocacy were advanced through local partnerships, educating students, collaboration with policy advocates, and expanding patient care.[10]

Clinical Care
Transhealth Northampton is attempting to serve the needs of the estimated 20,000 trans and gender-diverse individuals across different parts of New England.[11] By July, just two months after opening, the organization had served 100 patients and clients.[12] Transhealth Northampton is a member of the New England Gender C.A.R.E Consortium.[13]
Advocacy
Transhealth Northampton advanced policy change by commenting on moves by the federal and state government.[14][15][16] Magazines such as Into hailed Transhealth Northampton as the "future of American healthcare."[17] Dallas Ducar, the CEO of Transhealth Northampton has been particularly vocal about speaking against discrimination in healthcare, the need for increased healthcare access through telehealth and interstate licensure, and expanding reimbursement and incentives for gender-affirming care.[18] [19][20][21][22] Transhealth Northampton is a member of the National LGBTQI Health Roundtable.[23][24]
Education
Transhealth Northampton has been involved in various educational initiatives across Western Massachusetts. Brooke Stott, one of the researchers on the PATH Study also began working on educational initiatives with local partners.[25][4] Aleah Nesteby, a local nurse practitioner, joined Transhealth Northampton in the fall of 2021 to educate clinicians and also focus on educating the general public about working with the LGBTQ community.[26]
Research
Transhealth Northampton has assisted in the development of the Endocrine Nurses Society Position Statement on Transgender and Gender Diverse Care.[27] Transhealth Northampton plans to continue community-based participatory research once the organization has developed an Institutional Review Board.[8]
