Travelling Gallery
Travelling Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in a bus and part of Scotland’s cultural sector. The service was initiated by the Scottish Arts Council (SAC) in 1978 with a vision to provide communities throughout Scotland with access to contemporary art and the opportunity to engage with experimental art practices. Founded in a time when most Scottish cultural outreach programmes focused on the direct hinterlands of Edinburgh and Glasgow, Travelling Gallery was founded to improve the accessibility of contemporary art to Scottish communities. It still strives to create fair conditions and remove barriers to allow access and engagement for audiences across Scotland in their own familiar environment.[1]
The service was transferred from the SAC to the City of Edinburgh Council in 1997. Ten years later, in 2007, the service received funding from the National Lottery and City of Edinburgh Council, which allowed for a custom Travelling Gallery bus with integrated gallery space to be built.[2] Now in its third incarnation, Travelling Gallery continues to give schools and communities throughout Scotland the opportunity to engage, participate and experience contemporary art in their own communities.
Mission
Travelling Gallery aims to educate and challenge its audiences by commissioning diverse and experimental exhibitions. To achieve this, it brings new works by both young artists as well as established national and international artists to Scottish communities through two sixteen-week tours a year in either group or solo exhibitions. They build partnerships with local authorities, schools, colleges, arts organisations and festivals to work collaboratively across Scotland. Each exhibition includes a creative learning programme of artist talks, film screenings, workshops, events, learning packs and interpretative materials.[3]
