Treepot Media is an independent media company based in Ottawa, Ontario, that focuses on supporting and elevating emerging filmmakers. Founded in 2010 by filmmaker and engineer Jith Paul[1], the organization has transitioned from a direct production house into a community-driven hub for the local independent film scene.
Current Initiatives
Today, Treepot Media primarily operates as a resource and platform for creative collaboration:
- film613: A curated blog and resource for the Ottawa and Outaouais region's film, television, and creative arts community.
- Treepot Spark: A series of artist talks, podcasts, watch parties, and meetups designed to foster collaboration among local creatives.
History and Production
Between 2010 and 2017, the company was actively involved in producing and screening films:
- Notable Films: Produced award-winning shorts such as Algebra and A Clean Slate.
- The Cliffhanger[2] Project: A unique "cinematic chain letter" where five filmmakers each created a chapter of a feature-length film based on the previous person's cliffhanger.
- Treepot Film Festival[3]: A series of screenings (2011–2014) that showcased over 150 local and independent films, eventually evolving into the Ottawa Canadian Film Festival (OCan) in 2015.
- IndieKoala: A former video-on-demand service (2013–2016) that helped distribute local independent films beyond the region.
