Trellis is an American legal technology company that provides access to state trial court data.[1][2][3] The platform indexes court dockets, filings, and rulings, and includes analytics tools that operate on this dataset.[2][4]
History
Trellis was founded by attorney Nicole Clark in 2018.[5] Clark had worked as an attorney in private practice, litigating business and labor and employment matters at the state trial court level.[6] She developed an initial version of the platform with software developers, which she used to aggregate state trial court data for her own motion practice.[6][7] Clark has said the idea for the platform came from the difficulty she encountered accessing state-court documents and rulings.[7][5] Alon Shwartz joined the company as a late stage co-founder and chief product officer in 2019; his appointment was announced alongside a funding round in February 2020.[8][9]
Technology
Trellis started with coverage of California courts and had expanded to New York, Florida, and Texas by August 2020.[5][1] As of 2026, the platform covered 45 states and more than 3,000 courts in over 2,500 counties.[3] It includes data on judges, law firms, corporations, and case verdicts.[4] Trellis's judge-profile pages have been cited as a source by news outlets, including LAist and the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.[10][11]
In November 2024, Trellis introduced Trellis AI, a generative AI product built on its trial court dataset.[2][12] The following year, in May 2025, the law firm Fisher Phillips said it had integrated Trellis AI into an internal case-alert system.[13]
In May 2026, Trellis was one of more than 20 legal-technology companies whose data was made accessible through Anthropic's Claude AI assistant via the Model Context Protocol, as part of a set of legal-industry connectors released by Anthropic.[14][15] One month later, the company said it had made similar data access available through a ChatGPT plugin and through its own product, Trellis Chat.[16]
Financing
Trellis raised $2 million in seed funding in March 2019, led by Okapi Venture Capital, with participation from Craft Ventures, Sequoia Scout, Revel Ventures, and Intrepid Ventures.[17][18] In February 2020, the company raised an additional $4.4 million round led by Craft Ventures.[9] In October 2021, Trellis raised a Series A round of $14.1 million led by Headline, with participation from Calibrate Ventures, Craft Ventures, and Revel Partners.[19][20] In August 2023, Trellis raised $15 million in Series B funding led by Top Tier Capital Partners, with participation from Calibrate Ventures, Craft Ventures, Headline, Okapi Venture Capital, Revel Partners, and Sky Dayton.[21][22]
