Trenton "Trent" Cotney is an American construction attorney, author, and industry advocate who serves as partner and Construction Team Leader at the national law firm Adams & Reese, LLP.[1]
Early life and education
Cotney was born in Jacksonville, Florida. He attended Vanderbilt University, where he graduated summa cum laude in 1996 with high honors in political science. Cotney received the prestigious Alexander Heard Award for excellence in political science in 1996. In 1999, he obtained his Juris Doctor from Vanderbilt University School of Law.[2]

In 1999, Cotney was admitted to practice law by the Florida Bar,[3] and he is now licesned in Tennesse, Texas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Wyoming, and D.C. He was part of the inaugural class of lawyers in 2005 to become Board Certified in Construction law in the State of Florida.[citation needed]
In 2012, he founded Cotney Construction Law, a boutique practice that expanded to mare than 20 offices before merging with Adams & Reese, LLP, in March 2022, creating one of the country's largest construction-focused legal teams.[4][5]
Professional leadership
Cotney was appointed General Counsel of the National Roofing Contractors' Association in 2019.[6] He also serves as General Counsel for the National Slate Association, Western States Roofing Contractors Association, Florida Roofing & Sheet Metal Contractors Association, and Chicago Roofing Contractors Association, as well as many other state and regional industry groups.[7]

Along with co-host John Kennedy, Cotney hosts the construction podcast Law & Mortar.
