Trent ‘Moses’ Lawn (born 9 September 1997), is a New Zealand amateur rugby union footballer. A New Zealand Universities and West Coast representative who plays his trade with Marist Albion Rugby Club[2]. 'Moses' high work rate and remarkable turn of speed have become trademarks within the Christchurch Metro and Heartland Rugby scenes.

Background

Lawn was born in Greymouth Hospital, Greymouth, West Coast, New Zealand on 9 September 1997. He initially played rugby union, rugby league and ki o rahi within the West Coast in his hometown, Ahaura. As a young player, he liked to model his game off Anton Oliver (Highlanders) and Hitro Okasene (then Auckland Warriors). Lawn decided to turn down a jockey apprenticeship and attended St Bedes College, Christchurch as a boarder from 2011 – 2015.

Playing career

2015

Lawn was selected for the St Bedes First XV in 2015 after a stellar preseason. Despite his small stature, his upbringing from the West Coast saw his energy, tenacity and ferocious tackling impossible to ignore. Lawn played both flanker and hooker throughout this season.

2016

Lawn decided to continue to try to establish his playing career in Canterbury, joining the Marist Albion Colts side. Initially selected as a winger after a 75m break in a trial game, Lawn managed to persuade the coaches to let him play on the side of the scrum. A successful season saw Lawn play the majority of it at openside flanker.

2017, 2018, 2019

Over the next four years, Lawn struggled with an identity crisis and a lack of self-belief that saw him frequent other clubs. Lawn also tried out unsuccessfully for the Canterbury Lacrosse team (despite never having played) as a goalie and represented the social Mad Dogs ki o rahi team. From 2017 until 2019 Lawn was lured by the University of Canterbury rugby club with the promises of playing Premier rugby. It was also helped with the provision of free food at the University Halls of residence. It was over these years that Lawn’s size increased, just not vertically. This is where his introduction to hooker began and he played both hooker and flanker. 2017 saw University lose the final to Lincoln University. His versatility meant he did manage to play 38 games for University over the three years and his high work rate was rewarded with selection in the New Zealand Universities team in 2018 and 2019. Unfortunately, he was unavailable in 2019 due to breaking his wrist after being hit by a frisbee, however, he was selected for the West Coast Heartland team. In addition, Lawn's strong form for the students saw him selected in the Canterbury Maori Rugby "Waitaha" side from 2017-19.

2020

With coaching and management changes afoot, Lawn moved to Sydenham rugby club in the hope of further honours. In what was a largely frustrating season for Lawn, he still managed to clock up nine caps. Again, he was selected for the West Coast, but with the season cancelled due to COVID-19, this was purely a paper team.

2021 - Current

2021 could be considered the homecoming for Lawn, finally realising that his Catholic roots embodied the culture that Marist Albion[3] possessed. Having seen a lot of his colts teammates succeed at his previous club, he decided to make the journey across town to attempt to make the Premier side. 2021 was a successful season for the Power, who won the final in extra time. Lawn watched on from the sideline, unfortunately not required for this particular match. Lawn was selected for the West Coast Heartland side once again. 2022 was to become the young maestro’s calling, managing to nail down the starting hooker’s spot, playing in all but one of the team’s games. Marist Albion unfortunately, finished second to a strong Sydenham side but Trent Lawn had announced himself. His lightning-like speed and sizzling footwork would often leave would-be tacklers’ ankles broken as he romped away in one of his long-range breaks. The Marist Albion outside backs were the welcome recipients, helping themselves to tries at will. Lawn’s excellent form was again rewarded with West Coast selection[1].

Non-playing Career

Outside of rugby, Lawn has studied sport coaching at University of Canterbury and is now a successful landscaper in Christchurch where he resides. His love of landscaping and cutting grass has led to his nickname of Moses. He competes weekly in quizzes where he is the team captain of ‘Let’s get quizzical’ and is also a burgeoning chess player with a ranking of 1473.
