Trevor J. Blank is an American folklorist and associate professor of communication at the State University of New York at Potsdam. His research focuses on digital culture and Internet folklore.

Education

In 2005, Blank earned a bachelor's degree in American Studies from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he became interested in folklore as an undergraduate after meeting Charlie Kemp, then the state folklorist of Maryland. Kemp encouraged him to pursue graduate study in the field.[1][2] He earned a master's degree in folklore from Indiana University in 2007 and his Ph.D. in American Studies from Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg in 2011.[3]

Career

In 2009, he published the anthology "Folklore and the Internet: Vernacular Expression in a Digital World".[4] He is an associate professor in the Department of Communication at the State University of New York at Potsdam.[5][6]

Awards

In 2009, Blank received the Richard Reuss Prize for Students of Folklore and History from the History and Folklore Section of the American Folklore Society for his essay "The History of the Hoosier Folklore Society, 1937–2007."[7] In 2010, he received the William Wells Newell Prize in Children's Folklore from the American Folklore Society for his research on children's folklore.[8]
