TrialSpark
TrialSpark, Inc. is an American pharmaceutical company headquartered in New York. The company was founded in 2014 with a focus on providing clinical trial and related services. In 2021, having raised $156 million, and with a valuation exceeding $1 billion, the company transitioned into developing drugs, positioning itself as a biotechnology company.[1]
Company History
TrialSpark was founded in 2014 as a clinical services company with investors including Sequoia and ThriveCapital.[2] It later transitioned from a clinical contract research organization to a drug development company.[3]
Following the transformation, TrialSpark licensed Sprifermin, a Phase 2 candidate for the treatment of Osteoarthritis, from Merck KGaA.[4] The company since published a follow-up scientific abstract together with Merck, demonstrating the effect of Sprifermin in delaying clinically-meaningful symptom progression of OA pain (WOMAC). The effect was statistically significant in both the full trial population and the high risk subgroup when the high dose treatment group was compared to placebo using Kaplan-Meier analysis.[5] This analysis was derived from a previously published 5-year placebo-controlled, multi-center study of sprifermin, which demonstrated a dose-dependent increase in cartilage thickness and ability of sprifermin to delay progression to joint replacement surgery.[6] The asset is being developed through a business entity titled High Line Bio.
In addition to sprifermin, TrialSpark has a diversified pipeline of therapeutic candidates including ASN-008 for the treatment of pruritus, ASN-011 for the treatment of atopic dermatitis, and gusacitinib for the management of chronic hand eczema. Gusacitinib, ASN-008, and ASN-011 are in Phase 3, Phase 2, and preclinical development respectively and are managed under the business entity titled Libertas Bio.
In 2022, TrialSpark entered a deal with Sanofi to discover, develop, and license new drugs with a focus on Phase 2 and Phase 3 drug candidates aiming to encompass 6 transactions over a 3 year period.[7]
