Trichogramma pretiosum is a species of tiny parasitoid wasp in the family Trichogrammatidae. It is an egg parasitoid of several moth species and is widely studied and used in biological pest control, especially against lepidopteran crop pests.[1][2]
Distribution
Trichogramma pretiosum is widespread in the Americas and is commonly recorded in agricultural and disturbed habitats.[3]
Biology
Like other species of Trichogramma, T. pretiosum parasitises the eggs of other insects, mainly moths. The female wasp lays its eggs inside the host egg. The developing parasitoid consumes the host embryo, preventing the pest insect from hatching.
Trichogramma wasps are very small and are commonly used in augmentative biological control programmes because they attack pest insects before crop-damaging larvae emerge.[4]
Use in biological control
Trichogramma pretiosum has been studied for the control of several crop pests, including the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, and caterpillars affecting maize, cotton, soybean and vegetable crops.[5]
In organic and integrated pest management systems, releases of T. pretiosum may reduce pest pressure by parasitising eggs before larvae cause feeding damage. Its effectiveness can depend on release timing, crop structure, pest density, climate and the target pest species.[6]
Genome
The genome of T. pretiosum has been sequenced. A 2018 comparative genomics study reported a genome size of about 195 megabases and examined genetic features associated with miniaturisation and parasitoid biology in Trichogramma wasps.[7]
