Trinity Basketball Club is the official basketball club of Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. The club fields competitive men's and women's teams and participates in university competitions and national leagues under the governance of Basketball Ireland. The club is a recognized sports organisation within Trinity College Dublin. Also known as Dublin University Basketball Club, Trinity Basketball participates in multiple university and national competitions.

Teams and programmes

Trinity Basketball Club's men’s[1] and women’s varsity teams[2] represent the university in the Irish Colleges League. The club also fields a men’s team in the Basketball Ireland Dublin League (BIDL) and Dublin Men’s Basketball Board (DMBB) competitions.[3] In partnership with Meteors Basketball Club, Trinity supports the Trinity Meteors, a women’s team that competes in the Basketball Ireland Super League.[4][5][6]

Notable achievements

In 2025, the Trinity College Dublin women’s varsity basketball team won both the Division 1 intervarsity championship[7] and the Division 1 league[8]. That same year, the team was named Student Sport Ireland Team of the Year[9] and received the Team of the Year award at the Trinity Sports Awards.[10]

The women’s team also won the Division 1 varsity championship in 2024[11] and were recognised with the Performance of the Year award at that year’s Trinity Sports Awards.[12]

In 2023, the men’s team won the Division 2 league and the Division 2 intervarsity championship.[13]

The club was named Club of the Year at the Trinity Sports Awards in 2020. Edel Thornton was also named the Trinity Sportsperson of the Year at the ceremony.[14]

Club activities and culture

Trinity Basketball Club participates annually in the Colours Game against University College Dublin, an intervarsity rivalry event.[15] The club has also participated in international tournaments, including events held in Paris.[16]
