"Trivuboner priyo Muhammad" (Beloved Muhammad of the whole world) is an Islamic song or ghazal composed by the national poet of Bangladesh, Kazi Nazrul Islam, which carries the message of the arrival of the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad.[1] In 1935, he composed the ghazal along with another song "Sukno Patar Nupur" to the tune of Turkish traditional folk song "Kâtibim".[1] Like many of his songs, this song was first recorded in 1935 by his disciple and close artist Abbasuddin Ahmed .[2]
Background[edit]
There is no clear idea as to where Nazrul got the tune of the ghazal 'Tribhuvan's Beloved Muhammad' or from whom he learned it. It is believed that Nazrul got the tune of ' Katibim ' from the soldiers of the Bengal Regiment who were sent to Iraq for training against the German forces in 1914 at the beginning of the First World War.[3] And that tune was composed by the duet.
In 1926, Egyptian dancer Farida performed at the Alfred Theater in Kolkata. Nazrul was quite impressed with that. As it is not unusual to have Farida's model behind the song 'Momer Putul Momir Deshe Meye' in the Egyptian tune, who can say that Nazrul of Calcutta's first talk with 'Alexandria Mayi' or 'Katibim' may be in Farida's voice![4]
