"True Blood" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Justin Timberlake for his fourth studio album, The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 (2013). It was written and produced by Timberlake, Timothy "Timbaland" Mosley and Jerome "J-Roc" Harmon, with additional writing from James Fauntleroy. At 9 minutes and 31 seconds, "True Blood" is the longest song on The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2.[1][lower-alpha 1]
Background and production
Timberlake premiered the song at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on September 22, 2013, alongside "Only When I Walk Away".[2]
"True Blood" was written by Timberlake, Timothy "Timbaland" Mosley, Jerome "J-Roc" Harmon and James Fauntleroy.[3] The song was produced by Timbaland, Timberlake and Harmon.[3] Timberlake arranged and produced his vocals, which were recorded at Larabee Studios in North Hollywood, California.[3] Harmon and Timberlake provided keyboards for the song, while Elliot Ives played the guitar.[3] The track was engineered by Chris Godbey, with assistance from Alejandro Baima,[3] and mixed by Jimmy Douglass, Godbey and Timberlake at Larabee Studios.[3]
Critical reception
Dave Hanratty of Drowned in Sound called the song "familiar-sounding", additionally adding that it "peaks early yet feels the need to keep going, no real direction in sight, for nine-and-a-half minutes."[4]
