Trump National Golf Club Colts Neck is a private golf club and country club in Colts Neck Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey. The facility opened in 2005 as Shadow Isle Golf Club, featuring an 18-hole course designed by Jerry Pate, and was acquired by the Trump Organization in 2008. Following acquisition, Tom Fazio undertook renovations and the club was rebranded.[1]

History

The site originally hosted Colts Neck Airport, a small general aviation field that ceased operations in 1988. In 2005, the airport land was redeveloped into Shadow Isle Golf Club. The Trump Organization purchased the property in late 2008 and commissioned Tom Fazio to modify several holes and update course infrastructure.[2]

Facilities

Golf courses

The primary layout is an 18-hole, par-72 championship course measuring 7,550 yards from the back tees. It features bentgrass fairways and greens, links-style bunkering, and the signature par-5 18th hole with an island green.[1]

A separate five-hole par-3 short course provides practice and learning opportunities. The club has appeared in Golf Digest Best in State rankings for New Jersey, placing within the top 20 in multiple years.[3]

Additional amenities

  • A 60,000-square-foot driving range and 18,000-square-foot putting green
  • Clubhouse with dining rooms, event spaces, and a grand ballroom
  • Fitness center and swimming pools
  • Tennis courts

Tournaments and events

In 2009, the club hosted the New Jersey State Mid-Amateur Championship.[4] That same year it served as a qualifier for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.[5]

Controversies and public issues

Heliport approval

In 2011, the club applied to the New Jersey Department of Transportation for a restricted helistop license. Colts Neck Township’s Zoning Board denied the application over noise and rural character concerns. In December 2012, the New Jersey Appellate Division upheld the DOT’s approval, permitting up to 48 daytime flights per year for the owner, family, and guests.[6]

Alcohol service and fatal crash

Following an August 2015 incident in which an overserved patron caused a fatal car crash, the club pleaded no contest to administrative charges by the New Jersey Alcoholic Beverage Control Division. In July 2021, it agreed to a $400,000 penalty, with conditions including temporary restrictions on cart service of alcohol.[7]

Water use and environmental compliance

After a regional drought, the Trump Organization sought to increase the club’s water allocation by over 300% in 2011. Protest from local residents led to negotiations requiring new holding ponds and water-saving measures. Despite permit adjustments, the course exceeded its allocation on multiple occasions, resulting in violation notices. A 2016 consent order mandated irrigation reductions, environmental remediation, and fines totaling approximately $147,000.[2]

Farmland assessment tax treatment

The club maintains about 40 acres of hay fields and wooded areas eligible for agricultural assessment under New Jersey law, resulting in lower property taxes. While lawful, this practice has drawn scrutiny for reducing municipal tax revenue during periods of high residential property taxes.[8]
