Truth & Tragedy is a German/American hardcore duo established in Bamberg, Germany in 2020. The band is comprised of Aaron Bazen, singer and lyricist, and Frederik Stauss, guitarist and composer.[1] Their musical style typically features melodic guitar riffs, heavy breakdowns, and a mixture of clean vocals and screams, and they are known for their experimentalism across the sub-genres of metal, punk and hardcore.[2]

Biography[edit]

Truth & Tragedy formed in September 2020, during which time COVID-19 restrictions prevented the two members from engaging with their previous band, Veiled Ocean, for which Bazen was lead singer and Stauss lead guitar.[3] Bazen, originally from North Carolina, moved to Bamberg in 2012, following his deployment to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, as a combat engineer with the US army.[1] Musician Stauss, born and living in Bamberg, studied music education at the University of Bamberg, specialising in jazz and classical guitar.[1] Shortly after forming as Truth & Tragedy, the duo released their debut album 'Innocence Abandoned' in June 2021. In an interview, the duo stated, "it feels like 'Innocence Abandoned' is the product of a lot of years between us, just trying to find our sound. In Truth & Tragedy, we've found it".[3]

Musical style[edit]

Truth & Tragedy's musical style lies mainly in the genres of melodic hardcore and metalcore, however shares stylistic properties of punk, metal, emo and pop-punk. Described as "powerful and compelling",[4] Truth & Tragedy's musical style is defined by Stauss' melodic guitar riffs, heavy breakdowns and their combination of both clean vocals and screams. They are distinguishable for their lyrical content, which deals with violence, substance abuse, PTSD, trauma and alienation, stemming from autobiographical experiences of singer Bazen's time as a soldier.[1] In an interview, the band stated that their music "deals a lot with Aaron's time as a combat engineer in Afghanistan with the US Army, and the adventures, traumas and ghosts he dealt with there, and still deals with, back in civilian life".[3]

The duo named bands such as Casey, Being as an Ocean, The Ghost Inside and Counterparts as their musical influences, and appeal to fans of Stick to Your Guns, Heart to Heart and Hundredth.[2]

Releases[edit]

The band have made three releases since forming as Truth & Tragedy. In November 2020, they self-released their first EP 'Thanks for Nothing', featuring three tracks. This was followed by single "Helmand", released December 2020. In January 2021, the band signed with music label Artillery Music Group of Kingside Records, Florida, with whom they released their debut album 'Innocence Abandoned' in June 2021.[3][5] The album features their four previously released songs, totalling 10 tracks. They are managed by Terror Crew Productions, Quebec.[6]

Live band members[edit]

For Truth & Tragedy live events, the duo enlist a "live crew" of musicians to perform their music. Aaron Bazen of Truth & Tragedy takes the role of lead vocalist, while Frederik Stauss occupies rhythm guitar. Truth & Tragedy's live crew comprises Kai Hädelt (lead guitar), Vitali Knjazkow (bass), and Dominik Schmid (drums).[7]
