The Department of Computer Science and Technology, Tsinghua University (hereinafter referred to as the "Computer Department") established in 1958..[1]. In 2017, the Department received A+ rating in Computer Science and Technology in the national evaluation of first-level subjects[2].
In 2020, Tsinghua University's computer science ranked at the top in computer science evaluation ranking, including 13th in the UK QS Ranking, 15th in the UK Times Ranking, 1st in the US News Ranking and 7th in the SJTU Ranking[3].
The Computer Department has 121 serving faculty members, recruited by public institutions, 105 of whom are teachers, including 49 with a senior title, 47 with a vice-senior title and 9 with a middle title. There are now 6 academicians of Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 7 IEEE Fellows, 3 National High-Level Personnel of Special Support Program, 8 distinguished professors of the Chang Jiang Scholars Programme, 17 winners of the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Youth, 3 Top Youth Talents, 4 Youth Chang Jiang talents and 12 Outstanding Youth Fund winners[4].
According to the International Assessment Expert Committee, chaired by Professor John Hopcroft the Turing Award winner, in 2010, "The Computer Science and Technology Department of Tsinghua University has become a world-class computer science research and teaching institution.", which indicated its status as a world-class subject[5].
The History and Current Situation
The department was established as the Department of Automatic Control in 1958, the Computer Department of Tsinghua University was renamed the Department of Electronic Engineering in 1970, the Department of Computer Engineering and Science in 1979, and the Department of Computer Science and Technology in 1984, and has not changed since[6].
Tsinghua's task of constructing computer science and technology, software engineering, and cyberspace security – three national first-level subjects – are jointly undertaken by the Computer Department, along with three other departments, namely, School of Software, Institute of Cross Information and Institute of Network, which constitute the computer science cluster of the University as a whole. In the International Assessment of Computer Science, led by Professor John Hopcroft the Turing Award winner in 2010, all assessment experts agreed that the Computer Science and Technology Department of Tsinghua University has become a world-class computer science research and teaching institution. At the first meeting of Tsinghua University's Advisory Committee on Computer Science in 2017, the verdict on the academic merit given by the members is "the Computer Department of Tsinghua University, while making great progress, has grown into a leader in the construction of computer science in Chinese universities and a leading computer research and teaching institution in the world"[7].
Over the past 60 years, in terms of scientific research, the Department has completed a number of significant research achievements, represented by early computers such as 911 and 112, DJS-100 series integrated circuit computer system, artificial intelligence problem solving method, development and application of high performance computer system, China Education and Research Network (CERNET) demonstration project, IPv6 core router and the world's largest next-generation Internet demonstration network, visual media intelligent processing and innovative application of network computing model. For talent cultivation, there have been nearly 20,000 graduates from the Department[8][9].
