Biography
Tu Duu-Chih, with an electrical engineering background, entered the Central Motion Picture Corporation (CMPC) as an sound recording studio assistant after graduating with a high school diploma. He has continued to work at the Central Motion Picture Corporation (CMPC) for 20 years.[10] In 1989, he introduced synchronous sound recording in Hou Hsiao-Hsien's A City of Sadness, and in 1992, he pioneered the use of Dolby Stereo technology in Tsai Ming-liang's Vive L'Amour, continuously setting milestones for Taiwan's sound recording techniques and promoting Mandarin-language films to the international scene (p. 35).[11] Tu Duu-Chih has also been actively involved in cultivating new technical professionals for Taiwanese cinema and serves as an adjunct professor in the Department of Radio and Television at the National Chengchi University.[12] Sound engineer Tang Hsiang-chu, frequent winner at the Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards, is one of Tu Duu-Chih's disciples.[13] In 2004, Tu Duu-Chih founded his own recording studio, 3H Sound Studio Ltd., which continues to operate to this day.[14]
Early Career
Tu Duu-Chih was born on April 5, 1955 in Wuhu, in southeastern Anhui Province, China. He is the eldest son of Tu Chih-Kuei (father) and Chien Tsia-Yun (mother). After graduating from the Taipei Municipal Xiyuan Elementary School, he entered the junior high school section of the New Taipei City Municipal Shulin Senior High School. He later enrolled in the Electrical Engineering Department of Nanshan Commercial and Industrial School (now Nanshan High School) and entered the job market after graduation.[15][16][17]
In 1972, through the introduction of a close friend of his father, Tu Duu-Chih joined the electrical department of the Central Motion Picture Corporation (CMPC). Not long after Ming Ji became the new director of the Central Motion Picture Corporation, Tu Duu-Chih, as part of Ming Ji's recruit, then became a sound recording assistant in the recording studio and joined the inaugural Film Technology Training Class at the Central Motion Picture Corporation the following year.[18][19][20]
In 1975, while being on leave without pay, Tu Duu-Chih served in the military. After completing his military service, he started working independently as a film sound engineer specializing in film recording and sound design, and married Ms. Kao Pei-Ling, whom Tu Duu-Chih met during his time as an studio assistant. Tu Duu-Chih continued working at the Central Motion Picture Corporation for a total of 20 years before resigning in 1993.[21]
Partnership with Acclaimed Filmmakers
Edward Yang
Tu Duu-Chih's acquaintance with Edward Yang began with the film, The Winter of 1905, directed by Yu Wai-Ching and written by Edward Yang. Since then, the two of them had shared a close friendship for 27 years. Edward Yang had shared that, "[their] acquaintance has given each other a tremendous amount of confidence and trust, both in terms of friendship and partnership."[22] At the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, Edward Yang, in his capacity as one of the judges, recommended Tu Duu-Chih to all the committee members, leading to Tu Duu-Chih winning the prestigious Vulcan Award.[23] On the other hand, Tu Duu-Chih considers Edward Yang and Hou Hsiao-Hsien to be the two people who influenced him the most.[24]
The collaboration between Tu Duu-Chih and Edward Yang continuously set milestones for Taiwanese cinema.[25] Starting with Edward Yang's That Day, on the Beach (1983), they pursued realistic sound effects with a "realistic sense of space" (p. 35).[26] By the time of Terrorizers (1989), their work was considered by the international film circuit as a breakthrough in technical bottlenecks and reached the pinnacle of synchronous sound recording in filmmaking (p. 35).[27] During the production of A Brighter Summer Day (1991), Tu Duu-Chih put into opperation Taiwan's first official synchronous sound recording equipment. A Brighter Summer Day was, at the time, the only film production to complete all post-production sound mixing locally in Taiwan.[28][29]
Wong Kar-Wai
Tu Duu-Chih's collaboration with Wong Kar-Wai began with the film, Happy Together (1997), and it was also the first time Tu Duu-Chih utilized digital sound editing.[30] Tu Duu-Chih described Wong Kar-Wai's working style as "pushing everything to the extreme perfection untill the very last moment."[31] In their collaboration, they often had to work under extreme pressure, meeting various deadlines while making all kinds of editing. Due to their constant editing, every film they have worked together ended up having multiple versions, which sometimes posed challenges for Tu Duu-Chih to recall the first impression he had of the work.[32] Such filmmaking style has also presented technical difficulties as well as emotional rupture during the sound recording and editing processes.[33]
Hou Hsiao-Hsien
Tu Duu-Chih and Hou Hsiao-Hsien collaborated for the very first time in Hou Hsiao-Hsien's A City of Sadness (1989). In this collaboration, Tu Duu-Chih, with only a set of rudimentary equipment available, completed Taiwan's first feature-length film with synchronous sound recording from the ground up.[34][35] For the same project, Tu also travelled to Japan to collaborate with an internationally-scaled post-production studio for the very first time (p. 35).[36] After A City of Sadness won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival, Hou Hsiao-Hsien generously gifted Tu Duu-Chih a complete set of sound recording equipment worth over a million New Taiwan dollars (p. 35); the same recording equipment was also employed in Edward Yang's A Brighter Summer Day (p. 35).[37] In 2003, during their collaboration on Café Lumière, Tu Duu-Chih, encouraged by Hou Hsiao-Hsien, experimented with one of the only five hard disk recording devices in the world at that time, and the first in Asia, to achieve more realistic and emotionally as well as spatially immersive sound recording effects.[38]
Tu Duu-Chih considers Hou Hsiao-Hsien as one of the two people who influenced him the most, and he has shared that he has learned the attitude of trust from working with Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Hou Hsiao-Hsien, praising Tu Duu-Chih as an audiophile, describes Tu as "someone who would bring a recorder to capture good sound even in the middle of the night."[39][40]
Contribution
"Bringing Mandarin-language Films into the International Scene"[41]
In terms of sound technology, Tu Duu-Chih has always been at the forefront of Taiwanese cinema.[42] In 1986, he achieved simulated synchronous recording effects through post-dubbing with Edward Yang's film, Terrorizers.[43] In 1991, A Brighter Summer Day, also directed by Edward Yang, became the first film to use synchronous recording technology in Taiwan and underwent advanced simulation processing surpassing the local standards in Taiwan at the time (p. 35).[44] The Dolby Stereo first used in Hou Hsiao-Hsien's Dust of Angels (1992), the Dolby Audio Technology used in Hou Hsiao-Hsien's Goodbye South, Goodbye (1996), the Dolby Digital sound effects employed in Chen Yi-Wen's A Chance to Die (2000), and the 7+1 SDDS Sony Dynamic Digital Sound recording technology used in Chen Kuo-fu's Double Vision (2002) were all pioneered by Tu Duu-Chih's introduction of the latest sound engineering technologies.[45][46] Tu Duu-Chih's outstanding achievements has not only set milestones in Taiwanese sound engineering but also benefited Hong Kong directors.[47] For example, Taiwanese director Edward Yang's Yi Yi (2000) and Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood for Love (2000) were both selected for the Cannes Film Festival.[48] Film critic Tony Tsu-Wei Lan pointed out, "Tu Duu-Chih's sound processing is one of the important aspects that has made Taiwanese cinema internationally renowned." Lan also credited Tu Duu-Chih for the success of "bringing Mandarin-language films into the international scene."[49]
Ground-working for Taiwanese Cinema[50]
Tu Duu-Chih has long been engaged in the work of rooting and ground-working Taiwanese cinema.[51] He has provided technical assistance for cinematic works, documentary films, animated films, and short films by Taiwanese filmmakers.[52] He has also served as an adjunct professor at the Department of Radio and Television at the National Chengchi University in Taiwan, nurturing young technical professionals.[53] He has proposed a collaborative model between the industry and academia to address the training issues of Taiwanese sound professionals.[54] Every summer, he provides opportunities for students in film production to intern at his studio free of charge.[55][56]
