Turbo Overkill is a cyberpunk-themed first-person shooter developed by indie studio Trigger Happy Interactive and published by Apogee Entertainment. The game was released in early access on April 22, 2022, and launched in full on August 11, 2023, for Microsoft Windows via Steam and GOG.[1][2]
Premise
Players control Johnny Turbo, a cybernetically enhanced mercenary with a chainsaw built into his leg. The story takes place in the futuristic city of Paradise, which has been overrun by a rogue artificial intelligence named Syn. Johnny must battle through Syn’s augmented minions and rival mercenaries to reclaim his city.[3]
Gameplay
Turbo Overkill is a fast-paced shooter inspired by 1990s titles such as Doom and Quake, while adding modern movement mechanics.[4]
Gameplay features include:
- **Chainsaw leg** – sliding melee attacks that slice enemies.
- **Turbo Time** – a slow-motion mode for tactical combat.
- **Movement abilities** – wall running, dashing, double-jumping, grappling, and vertical exploration.
- **Weapons** – including dual magnums, boomer shotgun, rocket launchers, and a Telefragger sniper rifle.
- **Augmentations** – upgrades gained from defeated bosses.
- **Collectibles & modifiers** – cassette tapes and chips that unlock special modifiers such as "insta-kill" or "triple monster speed."
The game is divided into three episodes with a total of 24 levels. Each level can be replayed to find collectibles, achieve higher completion percentages, and unlock modifiers.[5]
Development
The game was developed by Canadian indie developer Trigger Happy Interactive. Publisher Apogee Entertainment, led by Scott Miller, supported the project, describing it as unusually ambitious for a small team.[6]
The early access release allowed feedback-driven updates, which added weapons, levels, and polish before the full 2023 launch.[7]
Reception
On Steam, the game holds an Overwhelmingly Positive user rating.[1] Critics praised the game’s weapon variety, cyberpunk atmosphere, and mix of retro-inspired mechanics with modern innovations.[8]
Some reviewers compared it favorably to other modern retro shooters such as Dusk and Ion Fury.
Legacy
Turbo Overkill has been cited as part of the resurgence of retro-style first-person shooters, often referred to as "boomer shooters."[9]
