Turhapati Estate
Turhapati Darbar Estate (also known as Turhapati Darbar or Turhapati Zamindari) was a prominent zamindari estate located in present-day Pashchim Champaran district, Bihar, India. The estate was based in the village of Turhapatti and historically held considerable land and influence in the region.
History
Origins
The origins of Turhapati Darbar Estate trace back to the late 18th century. According to local tradition and family accounts, the estate was founded by the Tiwari family, a Brahmin lineage. The earliest known zamindar associated with the estate is Bakhtod Tiwari, who is credited with establishing the estate’s authority in the region. While some modern sources mention a 19th-century foundation, oral history suggests an earlier establishment.
British Era
During British colonial rule, the estate operated under the Permanent Settlement system. At its peak, Turhapati Darbar controlled approximately 7,000 acres of land. Members of the Tiwari family, including Kalii Prashad Tiwari and Tara Prashad Tiwari, were influential figures who strengthened the estate’s prominence.
Decline and Post-Independence
After the independence of India in 1947, land reforms and land ceiling laws significantly reduced the estate’s holdings. Much of the land was taken over by the state or redistributed, reducing the zamindari from about 7,000 acres to roughly 800 bighas. The estate's administrative authority ended, but its cultural legacy continued.
Geography
The estate was centered in Turhapatti village, situated in Chanpatia block, Pashchim Champaran district, Bihar. According to the 2011 Census of India, Turhapatti had a population of 16,006 across 2,848 households, covering an area of approximately 1,136 hectares. The village PIN code is 845450.
Legacy
The ancestral mansion of the estate, commonly known as the Raja Haveli, remains a notable cultural and architectural landmark. Descendants of the zamindar family remain socially and politically active in the region. The estate is occasionally referenced in discussions regarding historical landholding systems and agrarian structures in Bihar.
