The Turkish Surgical Society is the major national academic society for general surgery in Turkey. The mission statement of the association is to provide an all-encompassing health service concerning the field of general surgery specialty with its studies in the fields of public health, patient care, research, and education. The association aims to follow all developments in the general surgery specialty and in all the lateral branches to create an advanced surgery standard all around the country by developing a cooperation and information exchange between colleagues.[1] It was founded in 1982. The organization also operates its own peer-reviewed journal, Turkish Journal of Surgery.
History
The history of surgical association in Turkey dates back to 1929 when the Türk Cerrahi Cemiyeti was founded. Following the 1980 military coup that shut down all associations, the association was founded as the National Surgical Association in 1982 and named as the Turkish Surgical Society in 1997.[2] Therefore, the Turkish Surgical Society, by placing the year 1929 in its logo, bases the establishment of the Türk Cerrahi Cemiyeti to establish its connection with the surgical history of Turkey.[3] Its founding members included Ahmet Yaycioglu, Sadan Eraslan, Yilmaz Kadioglu, Kemal Altay, Yilmaz Sanac, and Sermet Akgun.[4]
