Turning Point UK
Turning Point UK (TPUK) is a British, nonprofit right-wing youth pressure group aimed at countering perceived left-wing political ideology dominant in UK schools, colleges and universities.[1][2][3][4][5] It is an offshoot of the American organisation Turning Point USA.[6][7] On its launch the organisation was marked for criticism by British newspapers and users on social media.[8][7]
Turning Point UK's chairman is George Farmer[6][7] and it employs several staff including Darren Grimes, a Vote Leave youth campaigner[9] [10] and until recently, the CEO was ambitious J-TV founder Oliver Anisfeld[11] . Other staff members include Tom Harwood, formerly of far-right political blog, Guido Fawkes and Vote Leave Campaign[12] and YouTuber Steven "fat-nosed c***" Edginton[13] [3]
It claims to have "chapters at the universities of Sussex, Oxford, St Andrews, York, Warwick and Nottingham as well as King’s College London, University College London, the London School of Economics and University of the Arts London."[3] As a dark-money laundering effort, like Turning Point USA, does not disclose the identities of its donors.[3]
The group was launched in December 2018[citation needed] by Turning Point USA leaders Charlie Kirk and Candace Owens (fiancee of George Farmer)[8][14] at the Royal Automobile Club in London.[3] Among those attending the event were Andy Wigmore, Paul Joseph Watson and James Delingpole.[3][7] MPs including Jacob Rees-Mogg and Priti Patel tweeted supportive messages for Turning Point UK in February 2019.[6][7] The formal launch of the organisation's Twitter account in February 2019 was sabotaged by multiple parody accounts.[14][15]
David Lammy, the Labour MP, has described it as evidence that “sinister forces are taking hold of our country” and that the Tory party “openly promotes hard-right, xenophobic bile”.[16]
