Tuvalu Mosque, also known as the Ahmadiyya Tuvalu Mosque, is the only mosque in Tuvalu. It is located on Te Auala Street in Vaiaku, Funafuti, adjacent to Funafuti International Airport, and serves the small Ahmadiyya Muslim community in the country.[1]
History
Islam, specifically the Ahmadiyya branch, was introduced to Tuvalu in 1985 by Dr. Iftikhar A. Ayaz, a British Ahmadi Muslim and the British consular representative to Tuvalu.[2][1] In 1989, Ghanaian missionary Hafiz Jibrail (also known as Jibreel Ahmad Saeed) arrived and served until 1991, when he was transferred to Kiribati and replaced by Abdul Ghaffar. The Quran was translated into Tuvaluan in 1990. Construction of the mosque began in 1987 under Ayaz’s supervision and was completed in 1991.[2]
The mosque has a capacity of around 100 worshippers and is the only purpose-built mosque in the country. It is situated adjacent to Funafuti International Airport on Te Auala Street in Vaiaku.
