Twisted Pine
Twisted Pine is a four-piece Americana band from Boston, Massachusetts.[1] Their sound has been compared to "Punch Brothers meets Jean-Luc Ponty and Ian Anderson [Jethro Tull]".[2] They have also been described as upbeat, poppy, and energetic.[3] In 2020, Twisted Pine released their second album, titled Right Now.[4] The album featured their newest member, flutist Anh Phung.[5]
History
Twisted Pine developed its early bluegrass sound in a year-long residency at the Cambridge, Massachusetts bar, The Cantab,[6] which has a longstanding Tuesday bluegrass scene.[7] In Summer 2014, Twisted Pine took Best Band at MASS MoCA’s Fresh Grass Bluegrass Festival in North Adams, Massachusetts,[8] and the same prize at the traditional Thomas Point Bluegrass Special outside Portland, Maine.[9] Twisted Pine signed to the label Signature Sounds Recordings.[10]
Since then, Twisted Pine has shape-shifted, influenced by its members’ histories and interests. "They were once bluegrass", according to The Boston Globe, "but ... this Boston band has become something else, a wider version of string-band, boundary jumpers akin to outfits like Punch Brothers, Nickel Creek, and Crooked Still".[11]
Twisted Pine is Kathleen Parks (fiddle, lead vocals), Dan Bui (mandolin, vocals), Chris Sartori (bass, vocals), and Anh Phung (flute, vocals).[12] Twisted Pine’s past members are Rachel Sumner,[13] Ricky Mier[14] and Adam Moore.
