The Twopence farthing is an obsolete piece of british coinage that was made in 1560 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

History

During the reign of Edward VI,Shillings became terribly debased, after the tumutous reigns Jane,Mary I & Phillip,Elizabeth inherited a country with a economy in shambles. As a quick fix,Elizabeth revalued the shilling of Edward, with the 3rd period shillings revalued to 2pence farthings with a greyhound countermark and the "better" 2nd period shillings being revalued to the similarly obscure 4pence halfpennies.Because of the widespread distrust of mints and mint officials, it was decided that the stamping should be carried out in public. Stamping irons were sent out to the mayors of towns throughout the country. Along with a goldsmith, who would determine which type of shilling it was and stamp the coin, they would sit in an “open place” and countermark shillings. [1] When the crisis swiftly ended, the twopence farthing and the fourpence halfenny were swiftly and silently withrawn out of circulation.
