Dr. Tyler Safran is currently a plastic surgery resident and is known for his research in breast reconstruction.[1][2] Dr. Safran and his team have helped pioneer the direct-to-implant prepectoral technique in implant-based breast reconstruction.[3] This technique has shown to improve surgical outcomes, decrease animation deformity (implant displacement with contraction of the pectoralis major), and yield low complications.[4][5] [6]

Dr. Safran's article was featured as the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery's April 2020 article of the month and featured journal club. [7]

Biography

Education: Tyler grew up in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and received his medical degree in 2018 from McGill University. Prior, Dr. Safran had been awarded the Millennium scholarship to attend Marianopolis College.[8] After graduating from West Island College High School, he is currently training at the McGill University Health Centre, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.[9] Tyler is listed as one of the notable alumni from West Island College.[10]

During medical school, Tyler was awarded the Cannon Student Scholarship awarded by the American Association of Plastic Surgeons[11] for his extensive plastic surgery research. Additionally, he was granted the Luong T. Nguyen Award for the top-performing resident in general surgery.[12] More recently, he was awarded the Ross Adair Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence.[13]

Research From a research perspective, Tyler has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles in a variety of plastic surgery journals on a wide range of topics.[14] He has since developed a niche in breast reconstruction, as mentioned, with a focus on prepectoral breast reconstruction.[15][16][17][18][19] In parallel, Tyler has published extensively on technology in plastic surgery (3D printing, virtual reality/augmented reality, machine learning, & ultrasound technology).[20][21][22][23][24][25] In addition, Tyler has recently finished working on his first textbook chapter focused on prepectoral breast reconstruction. He has been named to the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery journal's resident advisory board and also serves as a peer reviewer for this journal.[26]
