In January 2014 UK Prime Minister David Cameron tasked a Holocaust Commission with establishing what more Britain could do to preserve the memory of the Holocaust and ensure that the lessons it teaches are never forgotten. The Commission ran a national call for evidence. The Holocaust Commission report was produced in 2015 and proposed the building of a National Holocaust Memorial.
Formation
In January 2016 the Holocaust Commission report proposed the creation of a new body to take forward the programme on survivor testimony, secure the money needed to deliver these recommendations and identify a prominent location for a new National Memorial and Learning Centre. Consequently, the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation (UKHMF) was formed to oversee the project[2]. The initial chair was Sir Peter Bazalgette, a television producer and Chairman of the UK Arts Council. The Foundation is technically an Advisory Board to the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government[3]
Members
The Commission members are appointed by the Communities Secretary. The most recent members were appointed in September 2020. They were Former Bank of England deputy governor Sir Jon Cunliffe, Islamic Studies professor Mona Siddiqui and Imperial War Museum chair Matthew Westerman.[4] The current chairs were appointed in April 2018[5]. The current full list is listed at the Commission web site
The Co-Chairs of the Foundation are The Rt Hon Lord Eric Pickles and The Rt Hon Ed Balls. The members are the Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, Natasha Kaplinsky, Gerald Ronson, Alice Greenwald, The Rt Hon the Lord Feldman of Elstree, Lord David Alliance, Baroness Dido Harding, Peter Freeman, Lloyd Dorfman, Sir Jon Cunliffe, Professor Mona Siddiqui and Matthew Westerman.
Activity
The UKHMF advises the UK government on implementing the recommendations of the Holocaust Commission. Their aim is to deliver a new National Memorial to the Holocaust in a prominent central London location, a Learning Centre, co-located with the Memorial, to enhance visitors’ learning and a programme to record and preserve the testimony of British Holocaust survivors and concentration camp liberators. The UKHMF is currently engaged in the project to build the UK Holocaust Memorial in London.
