UK Punjab Heritage Association [UKPHA] is a British charity which describes itself as a heritage organisation covering Punjab's arts, literature, history and traditions.

History[edit]

UKPHA was launched in London in 2001 after two friends Amandeep Singh Madra and Parmjit Singh started travelling to museums, academic institutions, private collections and libraries around both the UK and the Indian subcontinent and discovered a huge wealth of material relating to the legacy of Punjabi and Sikh culture including manuscripts, paintings, drawings, arms and armour and rare photos.[1]

They successfully received £450,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2013 to research the contributions of Sikh soldiers and the First World War [2] and have been working with a number of British institutions including SOAS, [3] Brighton Museum and the V&A Museum to deliver their projects.

UKPHA's work[edit]

Some of the events that UKPHA has organised include:

  • 2001: A talk on Sikh historical photographs at the V&A Museum[4]
  • 2011: The Golden Temple exhibition, at SOAS[5]
  • 2014: Exhibition titled 'Empire, Faith & War' marking the contribution of Sikhs during the Great War at SOAS[6]
  • 2015: A talk on Sikh soldiers in the First World War at Brighton Museum[7]
  • 2016: The launch of an interactive soldier map displaying the records of 8000 Sikh soldiers[8]

In 2014 there were discussions within the British Sikh community regarding whether the last King of the Sikh nation should be returned back to India. UKPHA suggested that Maharaja Duleep Singh should be left in the UK as per the last will written by Duleep Singh.[9]

Awards and nominations[edit]

The current Chairman of UKPHA, Amandeep Singh Madra, received an OBE in the 2018 Birthday Honours for his voluntary services to Sikh and Punjabi heritage.[10]
