UNBOUND (conference)
Comment: There are some definite signs of LLM text here. If LLM was used, it has to be completely rewritten by a human: there is no shortcut.Aside from that, looking at the sources: 1 could be substantial (can't see it because of firewall). 2 is broken. You should check for red error messages before submitting and fix! 3 and 9 are from the company, no good for notability. 4 and 8 are more about the company than about the conference, though 8 has some usable material about the conference. I can't judge 5 due to paywall. 6 is a known unreliable site; I have doubts about 7 also. You don't have to do anything about the paywall (sources don't have to be free) but the unreliable and company sources, plus broken source, leave you short of evidence for notability. UNBOUND (formerly INBOUND) is an annual business conference hosted by HubSpot, focused on marketing, sales, and go-to-market strategy. First held in 2012 as INBOUND, the conference was renamed UNBOUND in 2026. It is held annually in Boston, Massachusetts, with a one-year exception in 2025, when it was held in San Francisco, California.
History
Origins and launch as INBOUND (2012)
HubSpot had previously held a smaller event for its own customers before launching INBOUND in 2012 as a broader industry conference built around the "inbound marketing" methodology the company had promoted for several years.[1] Co-founders Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah, both graduates of the MIT Sloan School of Management, developed inbound marketing as a strategy roughly twenty years ago, built around attracting customers through content rather than outbound advertising.[2] The conference built HubSpot into what the Boston Globe described as a $40 billion software company, at one point the most valuable software company headquartered in Massachusetts.[2]
Growth through the 2010s
INBOUND grew significantly over the following years, expanding its session programming and attendee base.[3] In 2018, then the largest INBOUND to date, a keynote delivered by Halligan introduced a reframing of HubSpot's marketing methodology, retiring the traditional "funnel" model in favor of a "flywheel" model representing customer growth as a self-reinforcing cycle.[4]
HubSpot has reported that INBOUND reached its historical peak attendance in 2019, with the company citing more than 26,000 attendees from 110 countries and a keynote roster that included Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Amy Poehler.[5]
Pandemic disruption and return (2020–2022)
Like most large in-person conferences, INBOUND was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, moving to a virtual format in 2020 and a hybrid model combining virtual and in-person attendance in 2021. In September 2022, INBOUND returned to a fully in-person format for the first time since 2019, held again at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. The Boston Globe reported on the event's atmosphere and attendance, noting the conference drew about 10,000 people and featured speakers including Viola Davis, Jane Goodall, and Barack Obama.[5]
Recovery and relocation (2023–2025)
In-person attendance continued in the years following, with industry trade coverage reporting approximately 11,000 attendees in 2023 and roughly 12,000 in 2024.[6] In 2025, HubSpot held the conference outside Boston for the first time in its history, moving it to San Francisco's Moscone Center, where the company introduced 18 new AI-powered "agent" features as part of its product line.[2]
Rename to UNBOUND (2026)
The idea of renaming the conference originated internally at HubSpot in February 2023, when senior vice president of marketing Sunil Desai and Kat Tooley, then an experiential marketing executive, proposed changing the name to "Unbound" in an internal memo describing it as representing "the promise of limitless potential." Shah responded to the proposal in an email at the time, calling it "brilliantly clever" and describing it as "a simple twist on 'INBOUND' that takes it in a different direction, with a nod to its history."[2]
HubSpot delayed the change until 2026, in part because the company did not want to introduce the new name during the 2025 conference's first year outside Boston, out of concern about disrupting established brand recognition.[2] The rename was formally announced on April 6, 2026, coinciding with a period in which HubSpot's stock price had declined significantly amid broader market concerns about generative AI's effect on software companies reliant on content-driven marketing.[2] Tooley, by then HubSpot's vice president of global events and experiential marketing, said in an interview that the rebrand reflected a broader internal shift: "the old playbooks don't work anymore in an AI-first transformation."[2]
The rename was also covered by industry trade publications.[7][8]
UNBOUND 2026 was held September 16–18 at the Thomas M. Menino Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston. According to HubSpot, the event sold out its General Admission and VIP tiers, with General Admission pricing reaching $1,599 in its final tier, the highest in the conference's history.[9]
