The UT Southern FireHawks, formerly the Martin Methodist RedHawks, are the 17 teams representing the University of Tennessee Southern (previously Martin Methodist College) in intercollegiate athletics. The FireHawks compete in the NAIA and are members of the Mid-South Conference (MSC).[1]

Name
FireHawks was chosen as the replacement nickname for athletics. The formerly named Martin Methodist College athletics were known first as the Spinsters. This was while they were a women's-only college. After they became coeducational, the Cardinal was decided as the new mascot. The Indians became the mascot of Martin Methodist College in 1950. [3] Due to the growing Native American mascot controversy in college athletics, they changed their name to the RedHawks in 2002.
