Literary Work[edit]

Books Authored[edit]

Dr. Uday Kulkarni has authored many non fiction and annotated books. His major interest is in study of Maratha Empire. He has researched in depth about the famous Battle of Panipat. He has inferred on primary sources like correspondence of key figures on all sides and contemporary accounts, including reports in British newspapers as well as field visits to prominent places, Dr Kulkarni brings out several significant points about the battle and its background, which are much needed to understand the "why, how and what".[1] in his book "Solstice at Panipat-14 January 1761', which was published in April 2011[2]. Now it is in its second edition and fourth reprint.

He discovered a large collection of over 200 documents pertaining to history of Maratha Empire[3]. They were unseen and unused at Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland in London. Sir Charles Malet, the British resident at Poona, took his own collection of documents which he had collected to England in 1797 when he resigned from East India Company and his successors handed it over to the Royal Asiatic Society. Lieutenant Colonel (later General) John Briggs was given (so he had claimed) these documents when he was resident at Satara and later published two articles based on them around 1830, before handing them over to the Royal Asiatic Society in his old age. Dr Kulkarni visited RAS in London in 2013 to obtain digitized copies of all the documents for his research. The earliest dated item in the collection is a letter written in 1757 by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao to Dattaji Scindia[4]. A part of it is authored in his book "Bakhar of Panipat" by him, published in 2014[3]. A Marathi translation of 'Solstice at Panipat' was published in 2015.

He has authored "The Era of Baji Rao"[5].“The book is an account not just of Baji Rao but of the Deccan empires. It is divided into five sections, with maps, illustrations, a timeline, genealogies, eight appendices, at least six hundred references, a bibliography and glossary,” said Dr. Kulkarni. The book deals with the era that began in the mid-seventeenth century and ends with Bajirao’s death in 1740[6].
