Ufficio Zero Linux OS is an Italian GNU/Linux distribution, taken from SIITE SRLS and based on Linux Mint, PCLinuxOS and Devuan in its various versions, produced in Lombardy.

Ufficio Zero follows the OOTB (Out of the Box) philosophy, thus trying to put a vast number of applications and an automatically configured operating system into the user's hand from the live environment. The name Ufficio Zero brings you back to the starting point for all professionals who want to adopt a Linux operating system.

The project resumed life in April 2020, in full pandemic for the Sars-Cov-2 virus, from Julian Del Vecchio's idea of offering a desktop and free operating system to the various professionals forced to work from their homes: on the 15th April 2020 the company SIITE SRLS acquires the historic domain to release a first raw version in May, based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. From that moment the releases will be constant thanks also to the team that will be formed later.

Ufficio Zero Linux is present on Distrowatch.com since 2005

Main Features

Ufficio Zero is designed to offer both live and installable work environments that are extremely simple to use and with an attractive design, excellent hardware recognition and a vast range of installed software (in line with the "out of the box" philosophy, which everything is ready and immediately ready for use) and installable, constantly updated. The x86 and X86-64 architectures are supported.

Versions

Originally, starting from version 1.0 to version 1.1, Ufficio Zero was released in an edition based on the Xfce4 graphical environment and on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

Subsequently, thanks to the contribution of the other developers, the 2.x versions and latest will have Mate or Xfce4 as a graphical environment and will use the Linux Mint, PCLinuxOS, Debian and Devuan base operating systems.
Unlike the other Linux distros, Ufficio Zero uses codenames referring to Italian cities that distinguish the various versions: the Vieste version 2.x was based on Linux Mint 19.3 and had the Mate graphic environment and Orca support for blind users, the Mantova 2.x version was based on PCLinuxOS and had the Mate graphical environment and the Roma 2.x version was based on Devuan and had the Xfce4 graphical environment. The stable versions Tropea and Bergamo and the Siena version will follow.

At present, the available versions are:

Duplica OpenBox supported X86-64 Ubuntu 20.10 LTS none yes

Development still proceeds thanks to the existence of remote repositories and the downloadable ISO images of the system are released as soon as there are major changes or important updates to the software and system. By installing a previous version it will still be possible to update the entire system (including the kernel) to the latest version available.

Hardware Recognition

Ufficio Zero incorporates both Nvidia and ATI proprietary drivers which are selected by default from the live version if compatible hardware is detected. Otherwise, both for cards of different manufacturers and for graphics cards not officially supported by nVidia and ATI, opensource drivers are selected.

The configuration of network cards, wireless and webcam is also automatic. The printers are automatically detected in the Vieste, Tropea and Siena versions, but in Roma, Mantova and Bergamo versions it is possible to install them manually through the control panel.

Package Management

Ufficio Zero uses the default package manager apt / apt-get: while packages in .deb format are used for the Vieste, Roma, Tropea and Siena versions, for the Mantova and Bergamo versions the packages used are in .rpm format, however, alongside apt (used via terminal) are the classic tools such as Synaptic and others with more accurate graphics such as the one used in Linux Mint.
APT can therefore be used by default through the console on the various versions.

Applications

The operating system is distributed on DVD and is consequently more equipped with pre-installed applications than the distributions distributed via CD. The suite of applications included varies considerably depending on the category that is chosen through the post-installer that can be used with a PC connected to the network. The following table summarizes, in a non-exhaustive manner, the software included in the various versions.

Installation

The installer used for the Vieste, Tropea, Portofino, Urbino and 10 Basic versions is calamares or alternatively live-installer used by cubic. Cagliari version instead use the Drake installer.

They are designed to be understandable to any GNU/Linux user, even the most immature, the part of the installation that requires the most care is the one concerning the choice of partitions. The installation may take more or less time depending on the speed of the optical drive and the computer; on average about 20 minutes.

The installation can be performed both after starting the operating system by clicking on the appropriate icon on the desktop, in Live mode and (in the Cagliari version) by selecting the option at startup via GUI.

If you don't have a DVD player, you can use tools such as UNetbootin and others to create a bootable USB pen drive. Installing and running the live version from such a system is also consistently faster than on DVD.

Security and Stability

Ufficio Zero inherits the strengths and weaknesses of the Linux architecture in terms of system security and stability. It is therefore extremely resistant to malicious programs such as viruses, adware, spyware or malware. The architecture of a Linux operating system leaves, in fact, little or no freedom of action to a malicious program. Even if a malicious program exploited a flaw, the architecture of the operating system would prevent its use, at least in the vast majority of cases, and the damage would remain confined to the home directory of the user who caused the damage.[1]
Ufficio Zero provides for the creation, next to the root user account, of at least one other "ordinary" account (ie without administrator privileges). This reduces the danger of installed programs.
Choosing applications from the official repository makes it difficult to find malware applications, as any malicious code would be noticed and immediately eliminated.

There are also stability benefits, especially over the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems. Linux does not suffer, for example, from file system fragmentation problems, nor does the installation or uninstallation of applications dirty the system or slow down its startup or shutdown, unless they are included in the list of applications to start automatically. Furthermore, the crash of an application, in most cases, does not block the entire system.
