The Ukrainian Institute is a public institution of Ukraine that represents Ukrainian culture in the world and forms a positive image of Ukraine abroad. The Institute was established by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in 2017. It is under the management of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. It started functioning in summer 2018, after the appointment of General Director Volodymyr Sheiko, as a result of open competition, and building a team of specialists.[1]

The mission of the Ukrainian Institute is strengthening the international and domestic subjectivity of Ukraine through the means of cultural diplomacy.[2]

Objectives[edit]

  • Representation of Ukrainian culture abroad;
  • Ukraine's participation in the key cultural, educational, and scientific events worldwide;
  • International exchanges and mobility;
  • Image projects;
  • Support for Ukrainian studies;
  • Teaching and promotion of the Ukrainian language abroad;
  • Research platform.

Functions[edit]

  • Launch of regular formats for the presentation of Ukraine abroad (multidisciplinary and thematic festivals on topics of Ukraine, Ukrainian language, annual cultural initiatives);
  • Conduct and support of events and programmes abroad aimed at informing foreign audiences about cultural and social life, development of civil society, tourism and educational potential, opportunities and prospects for cooperation with Ukraine.

Activity[edit]

The work of the Ukrainian Institute is divided into sectors: film[3][4], music [5], visual arts, literature, performing arts [6], academic projects and programmes, image projects and programmes, development of cultural diplomacy, and research. [7]

Bilateral Year of Culture Austria-Ukraine 2019[edit]

As part of the bilateral Year of Culture Austria-Ukraine 2019[8], more than 200 projects were conducted in over 20 cities and towns in Austria and Ukraine. More than 100 partners from the fields of music, art, theatre, cinema, urban planning are involved in masterclasses, lectures and discussions, as well as concerts.[9][10]

Project partners: The Mumok - Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation, the Belvedere Museum, the Semperdepot Gallery at the Austrian Academy of Fine Arts, the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the National Radio City Hall of Austria Electronica, the Austrian Film Museum, the IWM Institute for Human Sciences, the MuseumsQuartier Vienna, the Viennale Film Festival, the Foto Wien Festival, etc.

With the support of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Austria, the Embassies of Ukraine in Austria and Austria in Ukraine, the Austrian Cultural Forum, the Austrian Cooperation Office in Lviv, and Ukrainian community in Austria.

Supervisory Board[edit]

The Supervisory Board is an advisory body that contributes to governance of the Ukrainian Institute's by helping define its priorities, manage assets and monitor implementation of statutory objectives.[11]

The Supervisory Board includes representatives of ministries as well as Ukrainian artists, culture managers and civil society actors:

  • Liliya Mlynarych, Head of the Supervisory Board, President of the Koktebel Jazz Festival;
  • Vasyl Bodnar, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine;
  • Volodymyr Yermolenko, Director of European projects of Internews Ukraine NGO, journalist, philosopher, writer;
  • Olesia Ostrovska-Liuta, Director General of "Mystetskyi Arsenal" National Cultural and Art and Museum Complex;
  • Iryna Podoliak, Politician;
  • Nataliya Popovych, President of One Philosophy Group of Companies, co-founder of Ukrainian Crisis Media Center and Ukrainian Leadership Academy, communications expert;
  • Olga Sagaidak, Dofa fund Co-founder, Head of the Interregional Cultural Forums Project, Art critic;
  • Akhtem Seitablayev, Film director, actor, director of Crimean House;
  • Yehor Stadnii, First Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine;
  • Roman Sushchenko, Journalist, Ukrinform correspondent;
  • Tamila Tasheva, Co-founder and Chairwoman of NGO "CrimeaSOS" (КримSOS), human rights defender, civil society activist.
