Umakant Soni is an Indian entrepreneur and computer scientist. Soni is a co-founder and the CEO of the non-profit organisation, AI & Robotics Technology Park (ARTPARK), based in Bengaluru, India.[1] He was nominated as an expert by the Government of India on the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence's (GPAI) working group on Innovation and commercialisation.[2][3]

Soni graduated with a Master's degree in Technology from IIT Kanpur in 2002.[4]

Career[edit]

Soni was working at Wipro, an Indian information technology services company, where he was in charge of three start-up business units, before leaving the company in 2008.[5][6]

In 2009 he co-founded Vimagino, a software product AI chatbot company.[6] In 2016, Soni and Manish Singhal founded pi Ventures, an early-stage venture capital fund.[7] The fund invests in startups that are focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) and internet of things (IoT).[8] In January 2018, pi Ventures, for their first fund, raised $25 million and in August 2018, the fund raised a further $6 million from the UK Government's CDC Group Plc.[9] In January 2022, for their second fund, pi Ventures raised $40 million and in November 2022, the fund raised an additional $8 million from British International Investment, the British Goverment's development finance institution.[10] Soni is also an advisor to NITI Aayog, an Indian Goverment think thank.[11]

Soni is one of the co-founders of the AI & Robotics Technology Park (ARTPARK), a non-profit foundation that was founded in 2020.[12] ARTPARK focuses on advancing innovations in AI and robotics.[13] In 2022, ARTPARK announced the launch of a $100 million venture capital fund to invest in AI and machine learning startups that are focusing on healthcare, education and mobility.[14]
