umlaut SE was founded as "umlaut AG" in 2019 when the company P3 Ingenieurgesellschaft, which was founded in 1996 and later became the P3 group, was divided up to form two companies – umlaut SE based in Aachen and P3 group based in Stuttgart.

umlaut’s subsidiaries include the following companies: umlaut communications GmbH (formerly P3 communications GmbH): since 2001. Technology consulting and testing services for mobile phone networks, services and end devices, set up in 2009 from P3 Solutions GmbH and P3 networks GmbH, with offices in Aachen and Belgrade.
- umlaut communications Inc.: based in San José, CA, USA (formerly P3 communications Inc.).
- umlaut engineering GmbH (formerly P3 engineering GmbH): 2012. Merger of P3 Ingenieurgesellschaft and Voith Industrial Services to form P3 Voith Aerospace GmbH. Following the complete takeover by P3 in 2015, the company was renamed P3 engineering GmbH. Project management, construction services (electrical and mechanical), calculations and technical documentation for international aviation, since 2012 as a joint venture between P3 Digital Services and the Aerospace division of Voith Engineering Services, with main offices in Hamburg, Toulouse, Montreal and Bangalore.
