Umm Asim bint Asim (Arabic: أم عاصم بنت عاصم) was the mother of eighth Umayyad caliph Umar II. She was the wife of Abd al-Aziz ibn Marwan.
Umm Asim bint Asim was the daughter of Asim ibn Omar, the son of Umar, the second Caliph. Her full name was Umm 'Aasim "Layla" bint Asim Zauja-e-'Abd al-'Aziz bin Marwân I. She was born between 633 and 677 in Medina, She died in Damascus, Syria and is Buried there. Her son, Umar ibn Abdul Aziz, sometimes counted as a fifth Rashidun, praised by both Shi'a and Sunnis.[1]
Umm Asim bint Asim was the most notable in character of the women of her time.
Her son, Umar II was likely born in Medina around 680.[2][3] His father, Abd al-Aziz ibn Marwan, belonged to the wealthy Umayyad clan resident in the city, while his mother, Umm Asim bint Asim, was a granddaughter of Caliph Omar ibn al-Khattab (r. 634–644).[4]
