Underground Orange

Underground Orange is a 2024 U.S.-Argentine black comedy thriller film written and directed by Michael Taylor Jackson who stars alongside Sofía Gala, Vera Spinetta and Kevin Johansen. It is Jackson's directorial debut, and was executive produced by Godfrey Reggio.[1] The film follows a Californian backpacker (Jackson) who becomes entangled in a polyamorous relationship with a gang of young actors that plot to kidnap the U.S. Ambassador to Argentina (Johansen). Underground Orange premiered at the 25th BAFICI. [2]

Premise

A Californian backpacker travels to Buenos Aires to pay homage to Hippolyte Bouchard, the Argentine corsair who conquered his hometown in 1818. After being robbed of his possessions, he joins a militant acting troupe called Bajo Naranja that uses agitprop theater and street art to fight fascism.[3]

Music

Thai-American artist Montonn Jira composed most of the soundtrack for the film from his studio in Bangkok. Other contributing musicians include Sandro, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Litto Nebbia and Kevin Johansen.[4]

Festivals and Awards

After premiering at the 2024 BAFICI, Underground Orange screened in competition at Frameline in San Francisco and IFFK in Kerala, India.[5] The film won the Audience Choice Award at the Goiânia International Film Festival in Brazil, the Best Queer Feature at the RIFF Awards in Italy and the Best Feature Film at Poppy Jasper International Film Festival in Morgan Hill, California. Release

Underground Orange launched theatrically in Argentina on October 10, 2024, premiering at Cine Gaumont and Atlas Caballito in Buenos Aires.[7] Noelia Gómez of InfoBae said the film “unravels the complexities of national identity and the repercussions of colonialism in the modern context.” [8] Writing for Indie Hoy, Julieta Aiello said, “it navigates between historical revisionism and denunciation, an ode to what’s youthful and punk, while remaining a declaration of love from a foreigner towards our country.” [9]

On June 5, 2025, Underground Orange released in theaters across North America, screening at Quad Cinema in New York, Clinton Street Theater in Portland, and Laemmle Theatres in Los Angeles.[10] Gary Kramer of the San Francisco Bay Times wrote that the film "has a playful, anarchic spirit that allows its cast to create and invent as the plot unfolds." [11] Will Coviello of Gambit said, "the film’s odd charm is its gentle cultural exchange, across borders and language." [12]
