Background[edit]

Following the mixed reception from his previous album, The Bad Guy Chronicles (2020), many debated over the rapper's lyrics and homophobic slurs through many of the albums songs. In response, John Anthony released Unexplored on August 7, 2020, just six weeks after The Bad Guy Chronicles dropped on June 26. Unexplored served as a critic response to his listeners, containing a mixture of various different styles and genres of hip-hop. The album featured a different approach with a more relaxed and contented John Anthony, something that wasn't showed in his previous album The Bad Guy Chronicles just a month prior.

Release[edit]

On June 26, 2020, John Anthony released his second studio album The Bad Guy Chronicles. With much anticipation upon its release, the album laid the ground work for the creation of John Anthony villain persona, referring to himself as "The Bad Guy" or "The Villain" throughout the album. In various songs, such as The Bad Guy, he attacks on the music industry and rappers alike with insults and disses, while also stating his displeasure with his doubters and critics stating: "I've been battered enough, 'til I was kicked to the dirt / Felt like I could've erupt and dropped the illest of verse / But I didn't think of it first, I left my ego aside / I should'a murdered all you fuckers on the track when I tried / But I was like maybe I should talk about all my problems / And see if people care, maybe someone can solve 'em / But nope, I was wrong, just a waste of my time / I should've never opened up on all my rhymes" he explained in his song "The Bad Guy". This referring back to his debut album The Therapy LP in 2019, where John Anthony opened up about his depression and anxiety. The album's aggressive style and aggravating insults was heavy criticized in comparison to rapper Eminem. This left many reviews by music journalist and radio stations to leave a stain on the album's reputation. After release of The Bad Guy Chronicles, John Anthony dropped "Wake 'Em Up" a week later on July 4. He stated on his Instagram story: "More music coming soon!" he posted.

On August 7, 2020, John Anthony released Unexplored to digital music stores and streaming services without any promotion or pre-announcement, unlike the extensive marketing done for his previous album The Bad Guy Chronicles. The album was also sold as physical copies on his website, including several merchandise, such as apparel. John Anthony relied on his social media services such as Instagram and Twitter to announce the release of the surprise album. One of the more popular tracks from Unexplored featured the song "33 Ways", which shows John Anthony rap 257 words in 36 seconds, or a grand total of 375 syllables.
