Unfamiliar

Unfamiliar is a Single-Player fantasy collection adventure video game where the player plays as Yew, the witch-cat. The game was developed by Mana Tea Games, an independent video game developer based in Melbourne, Australia and Released on Steam on December 13th, 2019 for Microsoft Windows.

Gameplay

Playing as Yew, the witch-cat, the player wanders within a Popup Story-Book themed world to collect various items (Charms, ingredients, seeds) that are generated around the levels. The games levels serve as check points allowing the player to unlock new features and can be replayed to collect more items anytime by the player, the first of these features is the Dress-Up area, where the player can customise Yew by dressing them in outfits that can all be unlocked from playing levels or collection special ingredients. The second feature is the Crafting Station, this feature is what allows the player to craft new cosmetic items, the last unlock-able features are the Plant room, where you plant seeds to farm rare items, and the ability to set up a Play Tower through Crafting.

Unfamiliar does not feature any enemies, timers, or anyway to fail the levels, with a strong theme of relaxation.

Development and release

Unfamiliar serves as Mana Tea Games first commercial game release with it's promotion mostly found on it's social media. Mana Tea Games did showcase the game at PAX AUS October 11th-13th, 2019. At their booth they run promotions of a raffle for every purchase for a cat tree that was used as a part of the display, cards with game codes that had plant seeds, and of pins Yew.

Music

The sound tracks for Unfamiliar were composed by Michael Trott and won The 2020 Freeplay independent games festival Award for Excellence in Audio.
