This article is about the comic book limited Unfamiliar writen by Haley Newmon.[1]
Unfamiliar[2] is a Fantasy webcomic written and illustrated by Haley Newsome[1]. This comic follows Planchette, a witch that moves to a new town, and her four new friends' adventures.
Background and creation[edit]
Unfamiliar[2] is a comic made by an art student back on Aug 27, 2016 on Tapas.[3][2] It updated very slowly, and Haley updated about 'Unfamiliar[2]' on her social media while her fans waited. Telling her viewers about her life as an art student. Which lead to her making videos and content on her Youtube[4] and then twitch.[5] Her comic quickly became one of the most viewed on Tapas[6] due to her new artistic fans inspired by her. She even spoke as a top creator at Tapas[3][6] for Emerald City Comic Con.[7][8]
Hailey said that she 'wanted to make a horror mortif that wasn't really scary at all'.[9]
Synopsis[edit]
"Little witch Planchette is tired of living in the suburbs, so when she sees a great deal on a house in a magical town, she takes it! The only problem? It's full of ghosts! With the help of a shy siren, a cursed girl, and a pigeon witch, will she be able to exorcise her new home?" Description on Tapas
Setting[edit]
In an eerily quiet town full of witches, ghosts, monsters, and faeries. Powerful witches reside in different Covens with different types of magic. There are just as many kinds of residents as hostile ones.
Plot[edit]
A little kitchen witch moves into a witch town after a lonely life being the only witch in her hometown. For her mission to make new friends, Planchette moves into a cheap house in this town. To her dismay, the price was so low because it's incredibly haunted. In running into town, she runs into a lanky witch named Pinyon. She asks who assumes this really powerful witch for help. Pinyon agrees and goes to check out her house. After Pinyon fails to help they head back to Hex Mex to beg the shopkeeper for help. The shopkeeper, Sun, shoves them out of the door. During Planchette and Pinyon's begs for help, a figure walks up. It's Babs, Sun's classmate back from high school. We learn that Baya is a Siren suffering from too much attention from her siren's charm, and Sun is a witch who sufferer from being ignored for being Cursed. This group of 4 and their familiers go on adventures bond and help solve each other's problems.
Subplot[edit]
Sun and Babs have their own romantic subplot. Where Babas helps Sun heal her curse in hopes of learning to be more unlikeable. They try to sell photos to the Faeries, who use pretty things as currency, as Babs' sisters do for money. They hope to gather more money to use to help pay for Sun's cures to be removed. In searching for someone to sell the photos of Babs to, they come across the king. He offers to pay for them. Once they agree, he hands the money to Sun and tries to take Babs. Sun stops him and runs away with their money. After they left the Feary Plane, Sun's curse was lifted.
Characters[edit]
Planchette[edit]
Planchette is the main character of this story. A lonely kitchen witch moves away from her hometown where she used to be the only witch. Her story starts in this new, strange town full of witches. With her bunny familiar, she sets out to make new friends.
Winston[edit]
A marshmallow, white bunny familiar accompanies Planchette. More often than not, he acts as her voice of reason. All though, he can be quite cynical at times.
Pinyon[edit]
Pinyon is a pigeon witch of the powerful coven of wings. Although she was the youngest of the Wings Family, she didn't have any magic. She struggles with self-confidence from not being able to summon even simple magic. It turns out that she had just hadn't met her familiar yet, who was distracted by "bread crumbs and predators'" After her fateful meeting with Ari, her new bird familiar, she starts to learn magic.
Ari
Ari is Pinyon's little bird familiar. Who is "easily distracted by bread crumbs and predators".
Sun
A disgruntled employee that our characters meet at the Hex mart. It turns out she has 7 jobs to help pay to lift a curse from her. A curse was placed on her by her parents. Her parents, being apart of a curse coven, did it out of tradition. The family tradition requires her to break her own curse to prove herself. She raises money alone because her parents will disown her if they find out she is trying to lift her cause this way.
Sun’s familiar
A taxidermied alligator with a bad attitude. He insults Sun almost every time he speaks but seems to have her best interests at heart.
Babs
The youngest of a family of sirens, Babs struggles with her natural siren magnetism. Being, at times, harassed by others. She is just ashamed of being a siren altogether because of how her family abuses their powers. Her father was jailed for abusing his power for profit, bringing shame upon their family. And her model sisters abuse others for their personal gain, including Babs for not doing the same. Babs is attracted to Sun because she never seemed to get noticed or harassed by others, leading to Babs asking Sun for help.
Babs' Sister
Devious twin models who sell pictures of themselves to faeries. who exiled Babs for being ashamed of being a siren. Ostracizing their baby sister Babs for lying about being only 50% siren. One is spider-themed while the other is moth themed.
Marlow
Bab's familiar with dark, long fur and one eye. Marlow acts as Babs' moral compass.
The King of the faeries
A creep who tires to trap mortal women he finds beautiful.
Legacy[edit]
Halley Newsome's[1] 'Unfamiliar[2]' is an inspiration to young artists just like her. To take the jump into creativity right now, and not wait till you're ready.
Biography[edit]
Haley Newmon[1], the creator of 'Unfamiliar[2]' went to Alberta College of arts[10]. She gratuated in 2017[11] with a bachelors in Design[12]. During her senior year, she started to work on 'Unfamiliar[2]' while she had more creative freedom on her assignments. After she became a comic artist, she became a youtuber[13]. Creating content that targeted her young, artistic fans. Haley Newmon[1] is now streaming and animating.
