Unified Endpoint Management
Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) denotes the unified administration of endpoints within the IT environment of an organisation. The term endpoints comprises both classic desktop computers and servers as well as mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. It is expected, that in future further endpoint types (see internet of things) can be managed as well.

Typical use cases or UEM are:
- Inventory of endpoint hardware and its installed software
- Updating software (patch management)
- Installation of updating of operating systems and firmware
- Installation of software or apps (software deployment)
- Vulnerability management
- Remote Access
- Backup and recovery
- Energy management
- Software asset management
- Configuration management
History[edit]
Preceding terms of Unified Endpoint Management have been Client Management, Client Lifecycle Management or Desktop Management for the administration of classic computers and Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) for mobile devices. The requirement for managing these different form factors was solved by separate software products in the past. Meanwhile several vendors tend to implement all those management functionalities within a single software suite, to simplify the handling for IT administrators.
