The Union of European Wrestling Alliances (UEWA) is a governing body for professional wrestling promotions in Europe[1] that formed in 2009. It regulates the European Heavyweight Championship (held currently by Andy Roberts)[2] and European Cruiserweight Championship (held by Nitro Green)[3][4] which are recognised by the promotions within its umbrella group.[5]
History[edit]
The UEWA was formed on 1 July 2009, with its founding member promotions consisting of All Star Wrestling (England), Catch Wrestling Norddeutschland (Germany), Dansk Pro Wrestling (Denmark), Italian Championship Wrestling (Italy), Premier British Wrestling (Scotland), Riotgas Wrestling Alliance (Austria), Shooting Star Wrestling (England) and World Wide Pro Wrestling (Switzerland).[6] The UEWA later received new members in Finland, France, Ireland, Norway, Romania, Russia, San Remo, Spain, Sweden and Wales, which included Association Biterroise de Catch, Welsh Wrestling and (the Finn Balor founded[7][8]) Fight Factory Pro Wrestling.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]
On 24 April 2010, UEWA hosted a one-night tournament in Lower Saxony, Germany to crown their inaugural European Heavyweight Champion.[17][18] Rampage Brown[19] defeated Erik Isaksen in the finals to win the title. The title was subsequently held by Mikey Whiplash, James Mason, Bad Bones,[20] Drew Galloway,[21][22] Lionheart,[23] Andy Roberts[24] and numerous others.[25][26]
The European Cruiserweight Championship followed on 21 May 2011, when Sean South defeated Kid Fite in the finals of an eight-man tournament in Oslo, Norway to become the first champion.[20] As with its Heavyweight counterpart, the Cruiserweight is defended in UEWA partner promotions across Europe.[27][28][29][30][4][31][32]
In addition to the UEWA's partner promotions across Europe, their titles have also been contested for numerous promotions outside of the UEWA umbrella. These include Pro Wrestling Elite,[33] Fife Pro Wrestling Asylum,[34] British Championship Wrestling,[35][36] Iron Girders Pro Wrestling,[37] 5 Star Wrestling[31] and Insane Championship Wrestling[38] in the United Kingdom, STHLM Wrestling in Sweden and #WrestlingDeutschland in Germany, among others.[32] The title has been defended outside of Europe on one occasion with a title match promoted by All Wrestling Organization in Israel.[39]
