United Airlines Flight 35 (UA35/UAL35) was a scheduled international passenger flight from San Francisco International Airport, San Francisco, California, United States, to Kansai International Airport, Osaka, Japan. On March 7, 2024, the Boeing 777-222ER operating the route lost a tire after takeoff from San Francisco. The pilot managed to make a safe emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles, California. All 245 people on board survived the incident.

Aircraft[edit]

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 777-222ER, serial number 30226. It was delivered new to United Airlines on January 2002 and the aircraft, at the time of the incident, was just over 22 years old.[1]

Incident[edit]

The incident occurred on March 7 at around 11:24 a.m. local time after the Boeing 777 took off from San Francisco International Airport.

Video of the incident showed the right rear tire/wheel assembly detaching from left main six-wheel bogie approximately seven seconds after rotation. Several cars were damaged in the airport parking lot. There were no injuries to anyone on the ground.[citation needed]

The plane was redirected to Los Angeles International Airport where fire engines stood on standby. The plane landed safely and stopped approximately two-thirds of the way down the runway, after which it was towed away, according to airport officials. The passengers safely exited the aircraft without any minor or serious injuries.[2]

Aftermath[edit]

A new tire was added to the spot where the old tire fell off after takeoff. The aircraft returned back to San Francisco three days after landing at LAX, and there was a video footage showing the rear landing gears of N226UA, with all six tires installed on each landing gear.[citation needed]
