UnityStation is a open source top-down tile based remake of the role-playing multiplayer video game game SpaceStation13, running on the Unity Engine. It is currently in Public alpha [2] and is expected to be released on Steam (service) in the winter of 2021[3]. UnityStation supports MacOS, Windows and Linux. There has also been experimental versions for Android (operating system) and IOS.

UnityStation development started in 2016[4], and has been ongoing since.

Gameplay[edit]

UnityStation is played in non-persistent rounds. At the beginning of each round in the lobby, players are able to create a customised character. Players can choose from a range of different jobs, such as janitor or engineer, which dictate their role and responsibilities. The game can be described as a roleplaying sandbox game, with events in each round largely being player-dictated.

The player has the ability to examine and use almost any object or being on the station. Interaction use one of the four intents: help, disarm, grab, harm. These allow for a range of different abilities when using items (For example using a Wrench on a gas canister with help intent can connect it to a connector while harm on a player will cause damage).

The game simulates power, radiation, atmosphere, chemistry, and shuttle ramming.

While different servers may have their unique station constructs, generally there are eight departments aboard the station.

  • Command (The leadership roles aboard the station).
  • Security (Enforcing the law, keeping peace and responding to emergencies aboard the station).
  • Engineering (Setting up power generation as well as fixing hull breaches, or building entirely new stations).
  • Science (Researching new technologies which can increase efficiency of the other departments).
  • Medical (Monitoring crew health and bringing deceased crew back to life via cloning).
  • Supply (Purchasing items and objects for other departments to use as well as gathering raw resources via mining).
  • Service (Keeping the station clean, fed and entertained).

Players spawn is their designated departments at round start and perform their duties. However some crew might have secret objects which they'll need to carry out in order to win the round, eg traitors, or nuclear operatives which are not crew and try to blow the station up.

Due to the presence of these antagonists and player incompetence, rounds descend into chaos. At this point the leadership will have to decide whether to call the emergency shuttle, which will end the round after it docks at Central Command, or try to salvage the situation and survive for longer.

Remakes[edit]

Space Station 13 has been characterised as the greatest role playing game[5] and as such there has been many attempts to remake Space Station 13 into a more modern Game engine over the years, however many have failed[6]. These failures have been characterised by the community as been caught by the Curse[5]. Regardless the community still has three major on going remakes, of which UnityStation is one of them.

Other remakes include SS14[7] and RE:SS3D[8]. SS14 has produced their own engine written in C Sharp. However RE:SS3D just like UnityStation uses the Unity Engine but has a different scope as they are remaking Space Station 13 from a 2D top-down game into a 3D game.

Popularity[edit]

An article about UnityStation was posted on GamingOnlinux, a website which shares linux news, detailing the launch of the public alpha in February 2020.[9] Before the game appeared on Steam in 2018 there was an article posted on Linux Game Consortium about the release date[10].

UnityStation is a remake within the Space Station 13 community, and the UnityStation steam page currently has over 3400 follows[11], while the official Discord server has over 6000 unique members. The official Reddit page has over a 1000 members[12], the community also supports UnityStation through its Patreon page which has over 90 donators[13]. Multiple videos have been released by not only the official YouTube page, which has nearly 20000 total views[14] but also content creators within the community and the Space Station 13 community such as Space Hippie[15], or Rimmy - Downunder Gaming whose video about UnityStation has nearly 200k views[16]. The game designer Dean Hall (game designer), whose games have been partially inspired by Space Station 13, tweeted about his support of UnityStation in 2017[17].

There has been 155 contributors to the UnityStation GitHub[18], and the top contributor has committed over 1000 times to the repository[19]
