From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

UniversalAutomation.Org (UAO) is an independent, non-profit organization aiming at decoupling automation software from the underlying hardware. It does so by managing and sharing the implementation of a runtime execution based on the IEC61499 standard. UAO was founded in 2021 with the aim to advance Universal Automation by providing an easily accessible technical basis for the establishment of vendor-independent and software-centric automation.[1]

Activity

UAO manages the reference implementation of an industrial automation shared source IEC61499 standard runtime execution engine, which is managed, maintained and extended by the members of the association.[2] By decoupling software and hardware and sharing a reference implementation of the IEC61499 standard, UAO provides a supplier-agnostic environment of portable, interoperable, "plug and produce" software that can work with any UAO-compliant device.[3][4][5]

The founding members are industrial companies, system integrators, OEMs but also universities and start-ups, who have access to the shared source runtime. Proposed changes as well as additions to the runtime code are made by the association's members.[1]

UniversalAutomation.Org Technology

The UniversalAutomation.Org technology is based on the IEC61499 standard, which is a system level design language for measurement and control systems (More: IEC 61499 and [1]). The automation architecture is characterized by its hardware-independent software components and can be run by any UAO-compliant hardware. [4]

Benefits

Sharing a common IEC61499 runtime execution engine enables the portability of software applications independently of the underlying hardware and the interoperability at application level. The reuse of software components on different systems enables the improvement of the ROI for software intellectual property and extends the lifespan of existing industrial tools.[6][7]
