Universal Hip Hop Museum
Universal Hip Hop Museum
The Universal Hip Hop Museum (UHHM) is a New York chartered 501(c)(3) museum and educational institution located in the Bronx, New York, dedicated to the celebration and preservation of hip-hop music, dance, art and culture locally to New York and the United States as well as globally.[1] [2]
History
Founded in 2015, the Universal Hip Hop Museum is the official museum of Hip Hop. The museum was chartered by the New York State Department of Education Board of Regents and founded by notable Hip Hop pioneers to document, preserve, and celebrate the culture of Hip Hop.[3][4] [5]
Museum
The construction on the South Bronx multi-use development project set to house the permanent home for the Universal Hip Hop Museum has begun. The museum has plans for an official ground breaking ceremony at the Bronx Point site in March 2021. The museum is scheduled to open in 2024, featuring exhibits that celebrate hip hop music, dance, art, and culture. The museum will fill approximately 50,000 square feet of the lower level at Bronx Point on the Harlem River Waterfront.[6] [7][8][9]
The [R]Evolution of Hip Hop
The [R]Evolution of Hip Hop Experience opened at the Bronx Terminal Market on December 6th, 2019 as the Universal Hip Hop Museum’s first public exhibit and temporary home until the completion of the Bronx Point development project set to be the museum’s permanent location.[10]
The 2,350 square-foot exhibit is free to the public and is a sneak peek at what will be on display in the permanent home of the Universal Hip Hop Museum. The exhibit features artifacts of Hip Hop culture, music, photographs, kiosks with content and experiences, as well as interactive elements including a DJ stand where visitors can test out their skills, and Breakbeat Narratives, an artificial intelligence experience that uses hip hop characters that interact with the audience providing an individualized musical history lesson. Visitors will find new exhibits every 5-6 months as the rotation of experiences will change illustrating hip hop and its culture through the decades.[11][12]
