History
Timothy Parker, editor of the Universal crossword puzzle since the mid-1990s, began editing its sister puzzle in USA Today in 2003.[1] The USA Today puzzle at this time was poorly regarded among cruciverbalists (crossword enthusiasts). It had a reputation for being "too easy and too boring".[2] In Wordplay (2006), a documentary about crosswords, the comedian Jon Stewart comments, "I am a Times puzzle fan. I will solve, in a hotel, a USA Today, but I don't feel good about myself when I do it".[3]
Parker left USA Today amid a plagiarism scandal; in March 2016, FiveThirtyEight reported that, over the years, the editor appeared to have copied (and republished under false names) hundreds of puzzles that had previously run in his own outlets as well as dozens of others from competitors.[1] Universal temporarily suspended Parker when the news broke and conducted an investigation that "confirmed some of the allegations", and in May 2016, USA Today's parent Gannett announced that it would no longer run Parker's puzzles.[4][5]
