CENTRO (founded as CENTRO | Diseño, Cine y Televisión in 2004 in Mexico City, Mexico) is a private higher education institution focused on professional training in creative disciplines.[1] In April 2025, it joined the international network Galileo Global Education.[2][3]
History
Founded in 2004, its academic focus is linked to the creative economy framework.[4][5] The university was established by Gina Diez Barroso and Abraham Franklin,[6] starting operations with a faculty of 19 professors and 82 students. In 2015, it relocated to a campus designed by architect Enrique Norten (TEN Arquitectos)[7] on Avenida Constituyentes. The 7,315 m² complex received LEED Platinum certification and has been documented by architecture publications such as ArchDaily[8] and Wallpaper*.[9]
Academic model and research
The institution offers undergraduate and graduate programs that have Official Recognition of Validity of Studies (RVOE) from the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP).[10] Its academic structure is organized around the pillars of research, culture, social impact, and technology.
In the field of research, it has the Center for Research in Creative Economy (CIEC),[11] which is registered in the National Registry of Scientific and Technological Institutions and Companies (RENIECYT) of CONACYT. The CIEC publishes the academic journal Economía Creativa (ISSN 2395-8200), indexed in systems such as Redalyc,[12] Latindex,[13] and Dialnet.[14]
Recognition
- Rankings (2023): El Universal's university guide ranked the institution among the top national options for a Graphic Design degree, giving it a rating of 9.09.[15]
- Institutional awards (Quórum Award, 2012 and 2013) as the best design educational institution in Mexico.[16]
- Student awards (D&AD Student Awards in London, 2010): Students from the institution won first place for the Broom-Stick Shelving System project.[17]
Academic community
The faculty has included professionals such as cinematographer Lorenzo Hagerman,[18] designer Alejandro Magallanes, and writer Bernardo "Bef" Fernández.
Notable alumni include figures with presence at international festivals and competitions:
- Marcelino Islas Hernández: Film director whose work Martha (2010) was presented at Critics' Week at the Venice Film Festival.[19]
- Almendra Castro: Filmmaker whose short film Ha was part of the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival 2024.[20]
- María Ponce: Fashion designer and activist, participant in the Graduate Fashion Week in London.[21]
