University College Dublin Symphony Orchestra
University College Dublin Symphony Orchestra (UCDSO) is an Irish orchestra based in University College Dublin. Since 2005 it has played annually in the National Concert Hall in Dublin.[1]
History[edit]
Established in 2002 with approximately 19 members,[1] as of 2022 the UCDSO reportedly had between 80 and 90 student members.[2] Described as the university's "flagship instrumental ensemble", as of 2022/2023, it was celebrating its 20th anniversary season.[3]
Participation with the orchestra is a recognised programme module and elective under the UCD Horizons scheme.[citation needed] Notable soloists who have played with the orchestra have included the violinist Cora Venus Lunny, pianist Philip Martin and guitarist Redmond O'Toole.[citation needed] The orchestra is conducted by Ciaran Crilly and sectional rehearsals are taken by experienced professional tutors.[citation needed]
The orchestra made its off-campus debut in 2005 at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, where it has since performed annually.[1] It gives between 4 and 5 public performances annually.[2]
