Introduction
The University of Michigan Credit Union (UMCU) is a state-chartered, federally insured credit union headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It is a member of the CO-OP ATM Network. The credit union serves University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University students, faculty and alumni, and those who live or work in UMCU’s service area.
UMCU is the only credit union headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It provides comprehensive banking services, including mortgages, auto loans, and financial education. As of August 2025, UMCU has 17 branches throughout Southeast Michigan and the greater Flint area; $1.38 billion in assets, 119,000 members and 220 employees.
History
Founded in November, 1954[2] with 12 members and $9 in assets, UMCU was launched to serve employees of the University of Michigan.
The credit union’s first branch was located at 333 E. William St. in Ann Arbor. In 2012, as the organization grew in members and assets, UMCU relocated its main office to 340 E. Huron St. in Ann Arbor.
UMCU Mergers, Acquisitions, and Expansion to Flint and Dearborn
UMCU continued to add branch offices throughout the Ann Arbor area. In May 2009, UMCU merged with Milan Federal Credit Union
In 2010, UMCU purchased the former Ann Arbor News building[3] and relocated its headquarters there in 2012.
In January 2014, UMCU merged with Eastern Michigan University Credit Union[4]. The merger added one branch, 2,700 members and $16 million in assets to UMCU.
In August 2014, UMCU merged with 2nd Baptist Church Federal Credit Union of Ann Arbor.
In March 2015, UMCU merged with Family Community Credit Union[5] in the Flint, Michigan area. This merger added three branches and 5,700 members to UMCU.
In 2015, UMCU opened its first virtual banking sites[6], offering remote videoconferencing and ATM services at University Pavilion, UM-Flint, and at Washtenaw Community College.
In 2017, UMCU purchased property at 2930 Woodward Ave. in Detroit[7], with plans to open a branch there at a future date. Also in 2017, UMCU opened a branch at 4901 Evergreen Road in Dearborn[8]
In July 2025, UMCU merged with Ann Arbor Postal Federal Credit Union[9]. Ann Arbor Postal Federal Credit Union’s main office was located at 18459 Redman Rd., Milan, MI 48160.
Partnerships and Community Support
UMCU supports more than 40 local nonprofit and community organizations[10], through donations, fundraising efforts and employee volunteer activities.
UMCU partners with Michigan Medicine in several ways, including:
· Supports the local C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital with book and toy[11] donation drives.
· UMCU’s Financial Wellness Program provides financial education workshops to participants of the MHealthy[12] program
· UMCU provides financial education through the Wolverine Pathways[13] program.
UMCU is the official credit union of Michigan Athletics, and partners with several University of Michigan sports teams including men’s football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s hockey and women’s gymnastics on special events and in efforts to support local community organizations.
In addition, UMCU has partnered with the Detroit Lions since 2018[14], as the official credit union of the Detroit Lions. As part of this partnership, UMCU offers Detroit Lions branded debit cards. The organization also offers financial literacy programs and special events for members of the Detroit Lions Cub Club.
UMCU has partnered with Washtenaw Community College to offer students financing options for non-credit Fast Track training[15]. In addition, through the Campus Collective program, UMCU offers information and instruction on financial wellness to students, faculty, and staff.
A partnership with Eastern Michigan University[16] includes financial education workshops with student groups and sports teams, financial information at student orientation events, and Ball Kids, where children of credit union members are chosen to sit courtside and assist with the games.
70th Anniversary
In 2024, UMCU celebrated its 70th Anniversary of service. To mark the milestone, UMCU donated $10,000 each to seven local charitable organizations, for a total of $70,000[17].
